Bullying Iran (NY TImes chooses sides)
NY Times ^ | 2/1/07 | staff

Given America’s bitter experience in Iraq, one would think that President Bush could finally figure out that threats and brute force aren’t a substitute for a reasoned strategy. But Mr. Bush is at it again, this time trying to bully Iran into stopping its meddling inside Iraq.

We have no doubt about Iran’s malign intent, just as we have no doubt that Mr. Bush’s serial failures in Iraq have made it far easier for Tehran to sow chaos there and spread its influence in the wider region. But more threats and posturing are unlikely to get Iran to back down. If Mr. Bush isn’t careful, he could end up talking himself into another disastrous war, and if Congress is not clear in opposing him this time, he could drag the country along.

The drumbeat began during Mr. Bush’s recent speech on Iraq, when he vowed to “seek out and destroy” Iranian and Syrian networks he said were arming and training anti-American forces. Mr. Bush also announced that he was sending a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf. Hours earlier, American troops raided an Iranian diplomatic office in Iraq. If anyone missed the point, aides let it be known that the president had authorized the military to kill or capture Iranian operatives in Iraq.

The NYT pines for the good old days of Jimmy Carter's reasoned strategy in dealing with Iran.

Well, NYT, we have two choices: threats or military action. We know you won't have the latter so you're stuck with the former. Complaining about it simply reveals your true intentions.

These people would have complimented Hitler had he only killed 5 million Jews, and not six.

The New York Times liberals are cheerleading for an American defeat in Iraq. They cannot afford for our country to win. It would permanently ruin the Left so they must stop it.

When is the NYT going to figure out that it is a newspaper in one city, albeit a large city, and quit trying to run the entire country from their sad little offices? Nobody elected them to do anything. Nobody even knows what they look like, and we can probably all be very thankful for that. As witness this editorial, they are on the wrong side of everything, and if they had near as much influence as they believe they do, they would be dangerous. Their sphere of influence grows smaller by the day, but they don't seem to realize that. I have an idea for them: print news and stop pontificating.

I disagree, brute force is the ONLY thing they understand. Diplomacy is only a means to postpone till the next attack.

This is not news, The NYT has always been sided with the enemy. If I had my way, which I don't, I would have the staff and the owners charged with treason and shot.

It appears to have worked with Libya and North Korea.

Their financial judgment isn't so hot, either:

New York Times reports 4Q loss of $648M

NEW YORK AP - The New York Times Co. posted a $648 million loss for the fourth quarter on Wednesday as it absorbed an $814.4 million charge to write down the value of its struggling New England properties, The Boston Globe and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

I liken this to giving penicillin to a dead person who died of an infection then saying that antibiotics are of limited use in controlling infections.

We are long passed the point in Iran where anything but brute force will do the trick.

None of our adversaries have seen brute force as applied by the armed forces of the United States. Iraq got a taste of it on the Highway of Death, but it was called off long before it had been applied to its fullest extent.

Iraq got a taste of brute force when we moved in to depose Saddam and it was very effective, as overwhelming force usually is. We dropped the ball when we failed to control the post-invasion power vacuum.

What we've used to date on countries like Iran has been no force. They would fare no better under a full siege by our fighting forces than did Iraq in Kuwait or Iraq when we moved in to lance that boil on the butt of humanity Saddam.

A large part of the problem is that we've let the MSM/Lefties cabal tell the world that we are failing despite our best efforts. We might be failing right now, but it hasn't been despite our best efforts. Our best efforts would have resulted in a far different outcome.

The real problem is that our enemies look at coverage by the MSM and think their reports are accurate, and worse still that they represent the thinking of America as a whole.

It's going to be interesting to what they come up with as the tide turns against the insurgency and the Iraqi government FINALLY gets a fair shot at running their county!

I believe this right down to the depths of my very soul.
