Origins of Free Republic
Self

Posted on 01/31/2007 7:17:49 PM PST by festus

So how far back does the Free Republic archive articles and how can I go back and find some of the first threads that started the whole thing off ?

It struck me I've hung out for a while and it was well established when I joined.

Be fun to see what we were focused on day one. For me anyway.

LOL! Kevmo, thanks for sending me the link to JoeSixPack1's thread. That's a hoot. I'm so glad those early experiences, because the anecdotes from others who experienced the same thing are wonderful to read. :)

"but the 1997 FR alums would know the real story."

Jet, I was here years before the 1997 SW update. There were only 3000 members then.

"We didn't actually p*ss anybody in power off until late 1997."

Give me five, bro! There's not many of us flame combat vets left that were here before 1997. Those big flame wars lasted for days. Those were good ones. I believe I got here in '95. When did you get here?

Five back at you! I got here in March 1997 - found one of Rodger Schultz's many Whitewater posts.

I first found FR on that fateful day in early 98, when Drudge posted the headlines about Clinton and an affair. While scrolling through the column headings on Drudge, I saw the one entitled "Whitewater," and clicked, and was hooked.

When I read this, I had to see if I posted it. This is exactly how I found FR. I lurked till about 2000 and then I logged in.

I wanna know what happened to the Freeper "Socks"

The poster that attached an audio of a cat's meow to his posts? Drove my dog nuts.

I am the poster formerly known as Mojo.
(I was also Hon.)

I'm amazed you are now admitting that, moj..
Anyone know what happened to Navigator?

I've often and proudly admitted that, you senile buffoon.

Thanks. -- "Senile buffoon" illustrates perfectly your mojo persona, & why you shouldn't be 'proud'.

It was a young guy. And for some reason, I think Nittany Lion knows who I am talking about. He had a funny LONG freeper name.

Hey Howlin! Unfortunately I don't remember...let me think on that one for a while. Maybe it'll come to me.

I saw it after I replied. I didn't know him. I do seem to remember someone who committed suicide, but I can't remember his name either.

From my recollection, Jim started posting on a Prodigy bulletin board sometime after Clinton got elected. He was not happy with the Clintonista's and what they were doing to our country. Eventually, he was booted off Prodigy for his postings and started his own BB and called it FreeRepubic, sometime in 1997. A lot of the early posters were from that original Prodigy BB.

This is a brief summary of my recollection.

I know that we could be Training Instructers for all these new folks when things get hot out there. We're E-8s here. SMSGTs. Jim Rob is the CMSGT.

Hey, we helped get FR to where it is today through all those wars. I refused the Purple Hearts just like you.

You're quite welcome! :-)

Incidentally, if you want to go directly to a particular thread and you know its numerical identifier, use this form for your url:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1000000/posts (the millionth thread)

But if you want to browse a large number of threads ending with a certain thread, then use this form for your url:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/browse?ao=1;more=1268000

This'll save you tons of typing. (You probably already know this, but just in case, and for the benefit of anyone who doesn't.)

Happy browsing! :-)

Let's urge Jim Rob to write his own historical sketch of FreeRepublic's origins. How he got us here from there.

People are confused out here. Jim, you have a story to tell!
