Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is the favourite Republican United States presidential contender for voters in the Garden State, according to a poll by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. 48 per cent of respondents in New Jersey would vote for Giuliani in a head-to-head contest against Democratic New York senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.
In other match-ups, Rodham Clinton holds a one-point edge over Arizona senator John McCain, and a 24-point advantage over former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. McCain leads former North Carolina senator John Edwards by six points, and Illinois senator Barack Obama by three points.
In 2004, Democratic nominee John Kerry carried New Jerseys 15 electoral votes, with 53 per cent of the vote. No Republican has won the Garden State since George H. Bush in 1988.
Incumbent George W. Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next United States presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.

I am convinced we are dealing with a nutcase.
"How do you get down with NO STAIRS, NO WALLS?"
He has NO BRAIN.
Just let him continue to make a fool of himself.
He's irrelevant.
Richardson. she needs hispanic voters. hispanics went 69-31 Dem in 2006, put Richardson on the ticket - they will go 75-25.
NUTS
Bill Richardson
Nighty night.
We know she's not going to pick a woman.
Now imagine you're a male politican and are picked as Hillary's running mate ... what kind of dynamic in the Whitehouse with Bill there?
What a zoo. I can't imagine any male pol wanting to put up with hell for four years!
Understatement! Night!
Well said, my niece was in the second tower when the plane hit and to this day she is haunted by the faces of those fireman she watched going up the stairwell and never came back down.
Now THAT'S funny!
There were many brave fireman who could have survived, but there was no leadership to make sure the disaster protocols were followed.
The parking garage attack could have trapped everybody. But, again there was no plan at all several years later.
And to top it all off, there is treason, security leaks (some right there in NYC) AND NO DAMNED LEADERSHIP.
Oh yes, Richardson from an inconsequential (electoral votes wise). I would think, if Rudy is the nominee, he might want to look at hard at a key state (Florida, Texas, California) for his pick.
"Well said, my niece was in the second tower when the plane hit and to this day she is haunted by the faces of those fireman she watched going up the stairwell and never came back down."
Absolutely.
If Sir Francis saw the people jumping from the upper floors, if he heard the crashing of their bodies on impact like I did, he would know that there was no way those people were getting out.
He should be ashamed of himself and he isn't worth debating.
How about YOU?
With all due respect, you are dead wrong about "any" honest, decent Conservative being able to beat Hillary. The '06 election proved what we are up against now. Santorum went down in flames, for NO good reason at all. So did many other good guys.
This country is Conservative, There isn't a majority of Conservative voter. We need Indies and cross over Dems to win. There isn't a single bottom tier candidate in the GOP field, that can attract those people; not a one and neither do any of them have the experience, charisma, financial nor political backing to get anywhere.
Personally and I could be wrong, I do NOT think that Newt is going to run in the primaries.
I know what you're saying about a man putting up with the Hillary/Bill circus. But as so many of the Democrats show us over and over, nothing trumps political ambition.
Don't nitpick...the MSM will call him a Catholic.
Don't listen to the naysayers. I researched Rudy's views and compared them to the views of Hillary, the Dem platform, and the Republican platform. The people here who don't like the chart, have been unsuccessful in challenging the contents of the chart. There's been a quibble or two about one or two items, and I even changed one item to be more accurate, although the previous version was accurate too. I changed Supports Gay Marriage to Opposes Marriage Amendment - which is more accurate even though Giuliani also supports Gay Marriage. So, make up you own mind, do your own research, but I spent a lot of time on the chart and it is accurate.
But he did NOT take any guns away from legally owned gun owners and THAT is the point!
And it might not be Hillary, in the end, who is the Dem candidate.
