People often create a sort of parallel reality and pretend this is the way things really are. Example: Theresienstadt,

When the Red Cross came to visit Jews were playing instruments, had plays, painted pictures etc, and life in that concentration camp really wasn't so bad. It was a "dog and pony show".
When you deal with certain issues peoples value systems and beliefs get involved. Reason usually goes right out the window at that point.
What you really have in Europe is:
1. Appeasement
2. Denial
3. Guilt for past injustices by some
4. A ultra liberal value systems that wants to champion itself as multicultural and can't accept that some cultures have no intent to integrate and in fact want to "dominate" their host country.
Think about what the consequences would be if France truly openly confronted some of their issues? You have nearly 10% of the population there that is Muslim! Think about a German politician and his historic hangups. Consider the vast amounts of ultra-hippies. The path of least resistance and political opportunism is what you read in this article. It's happy go lucky can't we all get along stuff that goes over well and easy. It's also a way of thinking which will push Europe only closer to it's own cultural and ethnic demise, something already well under way, even though they don't see that either.
