Richardson Watch -- January 31, 2007

Keeping tabs on Gov. Bill Richardson as he seeks the Democratic nomination for president ...

# After rallying Las Cruces residents to vote in favor of a gross receipts tax for his Spaceport project, the governor switched hats and states Monday, crossing the border into Texas to appear at an El Paso fundraiser for his presidential bid. According to the El Paso Times, Richardson picked up about $60,000 at the home of a local doctor. He followed the money trail to Houston on Tuesday, his campaign said. ...

# Richardson took Spanish-language TV heavyweight Maria Elena Salinas along on a car ride from his campaign office to the Capitol in Santa Fe and dropped this tidbit on her: "To relax, I ride my horse. I go off to the mountains where I can think alone. I get good ideas that way." Salinas, the "Noticiero Univision" anchor, pointed out in her syndicated column that Richardson has benefited from a media buzz by being part of the "diversity trio" rounded out by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. "But he needs to be a lot more than a token Hispanic to draw the kind of attention and raise the kind of money he needs to become el presidente," Salinas concluded.

# Carl Jeffers, writing on The Huffington Post blog, says that with the Democratic nominating convention being held in Denver in 2008, "if Hillary is the nominee, Bill Richardson is almost a lock for vice president."

# The Voice of America online says Richardson won't necessarily have a lock on Hispanic votes. VOA quotes Stephen Hess of the Brookings Institution, who says, unlike the overwhelmingly Democratic African-American community, "the Hispanic community is very much up for grabs."

I don't think Hiltery will make it. What I fear is Edwards adn/or Richardson. The do the I am a moderate well on TV, and could run to the right of Rudy McRomeny on guns and a few other issues. Imagine if Rino Rudy is nominated and the NRA endorses a democrat.

I fear nothing about edwards. He is the lightest of lightweights and an ambulance chaser with loads of baggage.

I know, but he either will make a good VP, to keep up the moderate image. Or there is the possiblity that Hitlery (who does not poll much over 40% even among rats) will savage and bleed most of the others that he is the best one left standing. Don't underestimate him though. Remember in 1991 I heard it said Bill Clinton who?

You haven't been following Edwards lately. He's left that moderate image in the dust and has embraced his communist beliefs on the campaign trail.

Uh-oh. Don't tell John McCain that. He thinks the #2 spot is his if HRC gets the nomination.

I sure hope so.

He is going for the Good Old Boy southern popularist who cares for the poor and the working man. This with a moderate run on guns he will get traction in the midwest and rust belt.

Great! That will almost guarantee the Mexicanization of the US. His ties with Chavez will make for interesting conversations around the water cooler.
