Australia Celebrates

Patriotism: There's a certain heroism in rising up by the millions to say "enough" to outrage. Like the Australians who defied a ban on their flag to wave it it proudly last weekend.

Despite the strong leadership of John Howard, Australians have been assaulted for their love of country and their carefree, easygoing ways, which are possible at all only because of their nation's freedoms.

Their assailants are many, but they have one thing in common — they're puritanical. Last fall, in a not-so-veiled invitation to conduct rape warfare against nonconforming Australians, a leading Islamofascist immigrant preacher declared all unveiled Australian women "uncovered meat" — and got away with it.

Australian troops coming back from the Iraq War have been abused by leftist radicals as war criminals. Left-wing nongovernment organizations have assaulted Australia's government for trying to enforce its border laws against illegal immigrants from the Middle East.

Meanwhile, the actions of a few yobs with flags in past celebrations have caused Australia's cultural elite to cast a jaded eye on any displays of patriotism, condemning it as politically incorrect or criminal.

The last straw came over the weekend, when a rock concert promoter for a yearly event in Sydney called "Big Day Out" warned Australians not to fly their flag at the Australian National Day event. "The Australian flag was being used as gang colors," he said, and anyone bringing a flag to the event, even if he or she had a ticket, would be booted.

If I couldn't have been born an American, Australian would've been the next best thing.

It's a wonderful place - but no guns.

Every time I've been there, I really missed my guns.

Funnin about missing my guns, but I go there often on business. Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Adelaide (mostly Adelaide). We work with the RAAF.

I go to Perth (Cottesloe) and Yallingup. Love it.

Hard to give up guns though. I could become a farmer and get a few to kill rabbits - but all super-registered with hard to get ammo...

But, looking at the trends - Australia is getting more freedoms and we are getting less.

I am absolutely sure they will fix things over there. These stupidities don't hang around long over there, they get baked in the hot desert sun and soon shrivel away.

Actually, we have plenty of guns. Law abiding citizens are able to own basic longarms very easily, and more powerful weapons if they are willing to do the paperwork.

For some reason, various groups have chosen to severely misrepresent the situation regarding firearm ownership in Australia. It's not perfect, but it's not bad.

Thank you for the update! Good to know that sense prevails in all things in Australia. Thank you for your wonderful country's alliance and friendship.

I thought Oz outlawed semi-auto rifles and pump-action rifels?

I also thought they outlawed handguns...

I remember seeing an AP photo of a huge pile of seized guns that the Aussies were going to melt down.

"After that, the bombing in Bali, which killed dozens of Australians, galvanized the nation further as Australia, almost alone among our allies, fully grasped the importance of winning the war on terror."

John Howard gets it...and apparently more and more Australians. BRAVO!

If they ever do, I'll relearn to eat Vegemite, and relocate.

Does this mean I could take my Winchester 30-30 and my .22LR down there...with appropriate paperwork and clearing, that is?

.
In the Australian House of Representatives last month, opposition member Julia Gillard interrupted a speech by the minister of health thusly: ``I move that that sniveling grub over there be not further heard.’’

For that, the good woman was ordered removed from the House, if only for a day. She might have escaped that little time-out if she had responded to the speaker’s demand for an apology with something other than ``If I have offended grubs, I withdraw unconditionally.’’

God, I love Australia.

No, though they require C/D licences instead of the standard A/B licence. I'm D licenced - you can get one if you really want to.

I also thought they outlawed handguns...

Definitely not - though, again, you need more than the basic A/B licence, and there are restrictions on calibre and barrel length.

I remember seeing an AP photo of a huge pile of seized guns that the Aussies were going to melt down.

What you saw was a photo of mostly legal weapons, voluntarily surrendered by people in exchance for cold hard tax free cash. The government ran a buyback to remove unused weapons from the community - firearms that people no longer wanted for various reasons. A small number of the weapons in those piles may have been ones a person wasn't allowed to own anymore - generally because of old criminal convictions that didn't prevent him having an A/B licence but did prevent him having a higher level licence. An even smaller number may have been weapons used in the commission of crimes as this was a safe way to dispose of those.
