Nah, WinME can run very nicely if tweaked right. 3 of our 4 boxes run it and BSODs are something we see a combined total of maybe 2, 3 times a year.

One thing it does not tolerate as well as WXP is Certain users who load it up with tons of programs running. I always run everything lean and do not have trouble when I fire up the old clunker though.

You know the type....Eight browsers open, little antispyware things and cookie managers running in the background. Then they open up a hungry graphics program and the whole system goes down...

Who protects us from people willing to make things up to smear Microsoft?

I thought that only happened in the Win/Mac wars.

This article is what I was referring to:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1757910/posts

Now it IS from a University (Possible Mac Bias?) and it IS from NZ (Possible Anti US Bias??) but when searches turn up so much adverse information, everybody is not making things up.

If they were, MS has the means to sue everyone on the planet for product disparagment.

Another option is to simply use LaTeX and use the beamer class to output to pdf or dvi.

Yes, and the nice thing about using LaTeX for slides is that folds in very neatly with, say, taking an existing LaTeX paper and turning the text into a presentation.

I like both the seminar and foil packages for slides. For anyone interested in looking at foils, a couple of good places are here and this pdf.

I managed to dig it up.

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=86943

Partially down the first page the author wrote a short list of instructions for getting started. It's still in "alpha" stage, but I find that it works with few problems. One caveat, though: if anything causes Explorer to crash (yeah, like *that* never happens), make sure to open the Task Manager and kill TClock3 before starting it again as it doesn't auto-exit when Explorer disappears and doesn't locate the new Explorer instance when Explorer is restarted.

From the archives:

When you install an army of dancing paper clips will file across the screen. One will emerge as the leader and announce "HELLO, I AM RAMGORGE, SPECIAL HELP FUNCTION OF MICROSOFT'S NEW SUPER COOL OPERATING SYSTEM, VISA....,er VISTA! WITH VISTA YOU CAN DO EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS DID, BUT NOW YOU WILL HAVE LOTS MORE COOL SPASHY GRAPHICS THAT LAUNCH WHEN YOU DO IT! INSTEAD OF PROCESSING COMMANDS, OUR NEW SUPERKEEN VISTA SYSTEM SIMPLY SHUTS DOWN ALL MOVING THREADS SO THAT ALL YOUR COMPUTER RESOURCES CAN CAN FOCUS ON HELPING YOU. SO, WHEN YOU ARE BURNING A CD, WRITING EMAIL, CHECKING A STOCK QUOTE, OR GETTING THOSE PICTURES OF GRANDKIDS, WE WILL SPIN THE IMAGES ROUND AND ROUND ON THE SCREEN AND CONSTANTLY CHANGE COLORS, WHILE A SOOTHING VERSION OF YANI'S "ODE TO THE STARS" PLAYS IN THE BACKGROUND. ISN'T THAT GREAT? MORE, DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR NAME WOULD LOOK LIKE IN UGARITIC, THE ANCIENT DEAD LANGUAGE OF THE MIDDLE EAST? WELL, WITH VISTA YOU WON'T HAVE TO WONDER ANYMORE. UGARITIC NAME RECOGNITION IS BUILT RIGHT IN. IN FACT, VISTA HAS OVER 76 MILLION OF THESE OBSCURE FUNCTIONS BUILT RIGHT IN. YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO "LAUNCH" THEM. RAMGORGE LOADS THEM RIGHT IN EVERY TIME YOU START YOUR COMPUTER (NOTE:2 GIGABYTES OF RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY ARE NEEDED TO ALLOW "RAMGORGE" TO RUN AT FULL SPEED, BUT YOU CAN GET BY ON A MINIMUM OF 1 GIGABYTE).

SECURITY IS A BIG CONCERN TO COMPUTER USERS TODAY. AT MICROSOFT WE ARE FOCUSED WITH A LASER ON SECURITY. THIS IS WHY WE STEADFASTLY REFUSE TO PUBLISH ANY KNOWLEDGE OF POTENTIAL EXPLOITS UNTIL WE HAVE A PATCH READY FOR THEM. WE UNDERSTAND THAT "HACKERS" KNOW ABOUT THESE SOFTWARE PROBLEMS AND ARE ALREADY WRITING CODE FOR THEM, BUT WHAT IS THE POINT IN NOTIFYING YOU SO YOU CAN WORRY ABOUT IT WHEN NOTHING CAN BE DONE? YOUR PEACE OF MIND IS IMPORTANT TO US. FURTHER, WHY SHOULD WE NOTIFY ANY "HACKERS" WHO MAY NOT ALRADY KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEMS ARE? AT MICROSOFT, YOU CAN TRUST US TO KEEP YOUR VULNERABILITIES A SECRET. MICROSOFT HAS FURTHER COMMITTED ITSELF TO YOUR SECURITY BY HIRING A WHOLE TEAM OF EASTERN EUROPEAN PROGRAMMERS TO TRY AND FIND IN LINUX (AN OBSCURE OPERATING SYSTEM THAT HARDLY ANYONE USES, HAS NO APPLICATIONS, INFRINGES ON A MILLION COPYRIGHTS AND IS SO GEEKY THAT YOU WOULD NEED A Ph.D. IN COMPUTER SCIENCE TO USE IT.... FORGET WE MENTIONED IT). WE HAVE DONE THIS FOR YOUR PEACE OF MIND AND SECURITY, TO DEMONSTRATE THAT WE ARE NOT THE ONLY SOFTWARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE PROBLEMS. SO FAR, THIS TEAM HAS FOUND 217 POTENTIAL EXPLOITS IN THAT SYSTEM. SEE, YOU ARE JUST AS SAFE WITH US! THIS IS ALSO IMPORTANT TO YOU BECAUSE MICROSOFT RUNS SOME OF ITS SERVERS ON LINUX FOR SECURITY REASONS, AND THE SECURITY OF YOUR DATA IS IMPORTANT TO US.

FINALLY, BEING THE LUCKY LUCKY OWNER OF MICROSOFT PRODUCTS MEANS YOU ARE ENLISTED IN THE "ARMY" OF WORLDWIDE SOFTWARE PIRACY POLICE. WE HERE AT MICROSOFT ARE SO COMMITTED TO SOFTWARE INTEGRITY THAT WE HAVE DECIDED TO MAKE ANTI THEFT FIRST PLACE IN OUR GOALS FOR EXCELLENCE (FUNCTIONALITY CAN WAIT). TO HELP AVOID COSTLY SOFTWARE PRIVACY, PLEASE HELP US VERIFY THAT THIS IS A VALID PRODUCT BY ANSWERING THE FOLLOWING:

1) What is your name?
2) Where do you live?
3) What is your phone number?
4) What is your social security number?
5) Did you steal the authorization number for installation from the internet?
6) Did you or anyone you know falsely generate an authorization code for installation?
7) Please write a short (10 pages or less) description of how we can be sure you are not lying about questions 5 and 6.
8) What is your credit card number in case we need to charge you, in the event that this software is not valid.
9) What is the name address and phone number of your attorney in case we need to pursue damages against you for software privacy?

FINISHED? (last movement to William Tell overture plays) GREAT!!!!

NOW PLEASE ENTER THE 2,817 DIGIT AUTHORIZATION CODE FOUND ON PAGE OF YOUR INSTALLATION MANUAL. PLEASE REMEMBER TO ENTER IT BACKWARDS, AS AN ADDITIONAL SECURITY MEASURE.

FINISHED? GREAT!!! NOW ALL YOU NEED TO START ENJOYING VISTA, THE SUPERKEEN NEW AND IMPROVED VERSION OF WINDOWS THAT DOES EVERYTHING WINDOWS DID BEFORE BUT HAS COOLER, LOUDER AND SPASHIER GRAPHICS IS TO SEND BY FAX OR EMAIL ATTACHMENT THE AFFIDAVIT SWEARING ONCE AGAIN YOU DID NOT STEAL THIS(PAGE 1 OF YOUR MANUAL). REMEMBER TO HAVE IT NOTARIZED!

THANKS FOR PURCHASING MICROSOFT PRODUCTS, AND WITH VISTA, WE CAN NOW BE "SECURE" THAT YOU REALLY PURCHASED IT. REMEBER, THIS IS THE MOST 'SECURE' SOFTWARE EVER! ENJOY!

Gimp is fine, and I use it all the time, but it is not Macromedia Fireworks. Again, you get what you pay for.

OOOH Gimp and Open Office are somehow secretive to only you, except, except.... I use it everyday on My 10 computers running Edubuntu... and they are crap but good for basic crap... so don't defend crap unless crap is truly what you love.

I admit I have a bias, but I really do think it is an informed bias.

3/4 the stuff in MS Office is bloatware that almost no one ever uses, and would not know how to if they DID need to use it. I am sure that there are folks who need Image Magic or Illustrator, or Office, or Photoshop, or any number of Wintel products, and the Linux equivalents are poor by comparison. I don't think anyone will argue that point.

The fact is that most folks only NEED a calculator with 4 functions, a log and exponential function, some basic trig and a small memory, and even THAT is way more than 85% of the populace. The rest of the programmable functions are just wasted outlay. That is the way I feel about the difference in gimp and photoshop. I have both, I have used both, and PHOTOSHOP IS BETTER. However, I use gimp b/c I need it on 8 different machines and it gets the job done and I never need all the stuff in Photoshop.

Biased? Absolutely. Yet when my wife needed to make a slide show for her class, Open Office is what she used. It was all she needed.

I use Linux because it does the job for free. I use MS Office when I want a job done correctly and professionally.

I use Linux because it does the job for free. I use MS Office when I want a job done correctly and professionally.

And a huge percentage of jobs which can be done in either are completely indifferent as to whether they are done in Linux or Wintel or Mac, and don't look any more "professional" in one environment than another. If it makes you feel better to fire up some software with Vedic chant recognition built into it, then use it. Most of us are just looking for a copy of Joyce Kilmer's "Trees." We can't tell what you did it on, and care even less.

I do admire people who are professionally competent enough to use the bells and whistles in some of these software packages. I really do. The slickest multimedia show I ever saw, though, was run on a linux box (I have no idea what the guy used). If you NEED it, then use it. Most of us don't.

Bill, I'm out of here!

XP is the last version of windoze I will ever use (outside of work).

I guess I'm just going to have to negotiate a peace treaty with that Linux penguin. However painful that might be.

It is nice being able to settle for less. I focus the extra time on developing communication skills and other stuff like that. [smile] Have a great day, and here is to you becoming even MORE proficient, skillful, and adept at windows based products. Best of luck to you.
