Today's egalitarian mentality is to degrade, belittle, scorn and marginalize anyone with greatness or vision. America was once a great nation...enjoy the memories.

You are fully correct. The grave threats America is currently confronting, and shall confront in the future, require the greatness of previous leaders. Iran is our next major test as a nation.

No, I'm very aware of the things Lincoln did during the war. I believe you still have to grant him vision, toughness, and wisdom. I am definitely a Southern boy, and love the heritage of the old South and the Confederacy. But, had we ended as 2 separate nations, we would have been easy pickings for European powers and divide and conquer tyrants. So, my judgement is that it is probably better that we remained one nation despite the Constitutional depradations of Lincoln.

actually, i do NOT believe that either nation (had the CSA won its FREEDOM from the invaders) would have been "easy pickings" for ANY outside power.

i suspect that when WW1 came along, that the THREE free nations in North America would have been allies against the Axis powers.

it is also equally possible that Canada, the CSA & the USA would have remained neutral throughout WW1.

may i also gently point out that the USA & CANADA never fought a WAR that lasted over 4 years either.

especially given the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of ATROCITIES committed by union forces against UNarmed, innocent civilians & our CSA prisoners of war, there would have been NO unification. at least not for HUNDREDS of years!

YEP. a whole series of them by the famous SCHOLAR, Harry Turtledove. (oddly enough, his expertise is NOT US history, but rather "Byzantine studies".)

ODD that he is better known for his "alternative history" & "sci-fi" novels, rather than for his "academic area of specialization".
