You may well be correct. I think it is a tough call. Seems like there is an "alternate history" sci fi novel about that.

YEP. a whole series of them by the famous SCHOLAR, Harry Turtledove. (oddly enough, his expertise is NOT US history, but rather "Byzantine studies".)

ODD that he is better known for his "alternative history" & "sci-fi" novels, rather than for his "academic area of specialization".
