Franken sets Feb. 14 as last day on radio but promises a 'sort of valentine'

WASHINGTON - Al Franken announced Monday that he will end his radio talk show on Feb. 14, increasing speculation that he is preparing to run for Minnesota's U.S. Senate seat in 2008.

"I'm definitely giving it serious consideration, and I plan to make a decision soon and announce that, hopefully not on the same day that Barack Obama makes his decision and announces that," Franken said on his liberal Air America radio show.

Franken disclosed his plans on the same day that Air America, which filed for bankruptcy protection last year, announced that it will be sold to Stephen Green, the founder of a New York area real estate company. Franken will be replaced on air by Thom Hartmann, a talk show host based in Portland, Ore.

"It seems like things are turning around," Franken told his audience. "Everything's falling into place."

Franken, who moved from New York to Minneapolis last year, has been contemplating a race against Republican Sen. Norm Coleman.

He said his last show on Feb. 14 will be "sort of a valentine," and he teased his audience by saying an announcement regarding a Senate bid could come on one of his final radio shows.

If he has made a final decision to run by Feb. 14, Franken said, "I'll make sure you, my listeners, are the first to know."

Franken grew up in St. Louis Park but made his mark in New York as a comedy writer and best-selling author

What a great resume...comedian best known for an obnoxious character named Stuart Smalley and the founder of an unsuccessful radio network which squandered millions and was involved in embezzlement charges. Sounds about right for a US Senator.

You and Air Communist going off the air is valentine enough! Your humiliating loss in a Senate bid would be a Great Thanksgiving present.

I just read that there was a bid on the table which would have made Air America solvent but it wasn't accepted because Franken is leaving. Has to be for a political bid.

I only managed to dip into Franken show a couple of times,
both for a couple minutes. One time someone called in and
congratulated him on calling his show the O'Franken Factor
and Al replied that he was thinking of calling it FrankenSense
and Myrth, and then started telling a boring story about a concert his kids went to; then, just after the '04 election,
he had a conspiracy theorist on talking about how the election had been stolen. Franken's voice sounded like someone who'd been woken up in the middle of the night. Maybe it was a rough week for Al, who'd been hoping for a victory party in
Boston, but then I realized that's how he always sounded
on radio.

Just like MA who keeps re-elected in Kennedy and Kerry...

btw I was on a moonbat messageboard for laughs and people
were saying just as well he was leaving-- as they were
tired of his shtick, same old jokes, same old routines.
When even the moonbats tire of you, that says something.
