Hazing Leads To Prison For Fraternity Brothers

TALLAHASSEE -- A Florida judge said she wanted to send a message with the state's first prosecution under a new felony hazing law.
Circuit Judge Kathleen Dekker gave two Florida A&M fraternity brothers two-year prison terms for paddling a pledge with wooden canes.
Dekker said one year terms might have been sufficient to punish the two Kappa Alpha Psi members but she added the second year to make sure their sentences served as a deterrent.
One of them was accused of paddling the pledge while the other urged the pledge to take the paddling and revived him when he passed out.
Last month, a jury convicted the two under a new law that makes it a felony to take part in hazing that results in serious bodily injury.
This is a BLACK fraternity.
And?
Felony hazing? So a frat pledge got his ass spanked by a wooden paddle (the article fails to mention the extent of his 'injuries'), and these guys are now convicted felons?
Is there any doubt that our government wants to make us all criminals? What are the two things convicted felons can't do, boys and girls? Vote and own a gun, the only two ways to dispose corrupt politicians.
With each new law the politicians pass to make crimes felonies, they tighten their grip over us.
Does it matter to the story that it was a black fraternity?
Were they "stepping" while they beat him?
The fact that it was left out of the story was intended to smear all fraternities. Black fraternities are notorious for beating their pledges with paddles until they bleed, suffer broken bones, etc.

It does say that he passed out.
The local press covered this more extensively - the pledge needed surgery to repair the injuries he received from this "paddling." This went way beyond a hazing stunt, which is usually meant to be embarrassing and perhaps uncomfortable, but which should not be so bad that another person has to be standing by (as even this article mentions) to revive the pledge when he passes out from the pain. What is described here as "paddling" was clearly more on the order of one of the more gruesome punishments in the Muslim world, where people are literally caned to death.
Don't forget the branding of members...
makes them look like cattle.
The kid had internal injuries that required surgery. He had to leave school because of it.
I went to school to learn...not to join a drinking club and have my a$$ paddled. Both are at fault. The "victim" for letting it happen and the other two idiots for having a fetish to spank a guys butt.
sounds like the paddlee passed out. That's a lot of paddling.
Black fraternities are notorious -- interesting bit of data.
Their whole culture is out of whack. They run their pledge program like boot camp as if they are training to become part of some army. They are separatists as well.
That's because at most schools, they are not (or weren't until recently) regulated by the universities.
But that is neither here nor there. There are plenty of stories about non-black fraternities doing stupid things like this.
Roger that. The things are considered "hazing" in a black fraternity are normally considered "assault" or worse in a white one.
Most white fraternity hazing injuries/deaths occur because of alcohol induced stupidity.
Most black fraternity hazing injuries/deaths occur because of beatings and physical violence.

True, which indicates pretty significant injuries. Also, a careful reading of the article indicates that this person was hit with a wooden cane, not a wooden paddle. Big difference.
As a reminder, caning is what happened to that fellow in Singapore a few years back after he was convicted of vandalism. It is not pretty.
I won't post the pictures here, because they are not for the faint of heart, but if anyone is interested in seeing the results of a caning, go here:

I agree that it's not here, but I definitely think that it's there.
