A Brooklyn man froze to death in his car after he and his wife spent 32 hours stranded in below zero temperatures upstate.
The couple was driving home from a wedding in Montreal when their car crashed off Interstate-87 around 1 a.m. Thursday.
Barbara Langner had tried to call for help with her cell phone but couldn't get service.
Family members reported them missing, and state police found the couple Friday in their Lincoln Town Car in North Hudson, about 90 miles north of Albany.
When authorities found the couple, Alfred Langner – who was 63 – had died of hypothermia. Barbara Langner is hospitalized. She suffered frostbite and also hurt her back.

Below zero travel:
- Winter coat, hat and gloves for each occupant
- Blankets, or better, sleeping bags for emergencies
- Thermal "space" blankets (reflective mylar)
- Heat source (Toilet paper, core removed, stuffed in 1 lb coffee can, soaked in alcohol)
- Food bars
- Extra water
All that takes up some extra room, but it will save your life.

The story doesnt mention the fact that the woman was pinned. College sweethearts? How sweet! But it has nothing to do with the story... yes, I know what you really meant, just being snarky

You miss the point entirely - all they needed to be saved was a couple of lousy cell phone towers denied by the self-serving enviro-nazis

Excellent list. I see I have a couple more items to add to what's already in my trunk.

Agreed. And my friend from Southern California tells me you better have a few gallons of water with you if you're traveling RT. 10 between SoCal and Arizona during the summer. Not fun if you're broken down in the desert in 100 + degree temperatures in the summer without water.I packed 2 1/2 gallons of water for an overnight hike in the Anza-Borrego desert while I was in Scouts. We hiked 10 miles to some indian ruins. We hiked back to the starting point the next day. I drank every bit of that 2 1/2 gallons. That is 20 pounds of water. When I got home, I hopped on the scale enroute to the shower. I lost 10 lbs overnight. I never ever perceptibly broke a sweat the whole time.
I carry lots of Atkins shakes, Balance bars and diet iced tea (Snapple) on the 900 mile drive between San Diego and Pocatello. If possible, I cross the California desert during dark hours. It's easier on the car to have cool evening air while driving through the mountains and desert between Las Vegas and Barstow.

Add: sand or cat litter, a small shovel, road flares (one in the glove box if your trapped) or a
green laser pointer above the sun visor, instant hand warmer packs, energy bars.
But again, none of this helps if the steering column has you pinned in the seat, your car is wrecked to the point you can't escape, and your only hope is that your cell phone works and you have just enough strength to dial 911 before you pass out from the pain -
And some enviro-jerk NGO fascist agency hasn't banned cell phone service where you inconveniently decided to crash, because the "towers would wreck the view"

Want to hear the worst part - he was pinned in, she had a broken back, he died at 13 hours from hypothermia - she was there for over 30 hours. The only thing they had to save themselves was a cell phone.
And during the 1980 Olympics, the whole area was covered with mobile cell phone towers - all gone now because the APA sued to have them removed.

Learned land navigation in the Boy Scouts, learned a lot more at Coronado.....topographic map and compass. Then they took the map and compass away and had us use the sun on our cheek and a watch.....which I had learned in the Boy Scouts.

Where I live we measure distance in beers. 30 miles is a 12 pack for 2 people. / sarc.
