Giuliani touts experience, but personal life may be an issue

BY CRAIG GORDON
Newsday Washington Bureau

January 28, 2007

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Rudolph Giuliani argued yesterday that his record of cutting taxes, improving security and guiding New York through 9/11 are proof that he could do the same as president - offering his strongest signal yet that he's serious about a White House bid.

[...snip]

Giuliani is trying to bat down questions from top Republicans about whether his White House ambitions are a popularity-fueled dalliance or something more serious. His speech laid out a point-by-point rationale for his possible candidacy, seeking to portray himself as a tested leader for dangerous times in the mold of Ronald Reagan.

[...snip]

He also appeared intent on quieting questions about his marital history by giving wife Judith Nathan an unusually high-profile role here. She barely left his side in public, and he called her a "partner" whom he leaned on for everything from getting through 9/11 and prostate cancer to understanding the science behind possible anthrax attacks.

Giuliani didn't mention that when Nathan helped him after his cancer diagnosis in spring 2000, he was, in fact, still married to Donna Hanover, and that the revelation of his illness came amid the messy public breakup of his second marriage.

In the end, Giuliani's two-day visit here encapsulated the promise and challenge of his possible candidacy.

On one hand, his name recognition and tough-guy image in New York, before and after 9/11, helped him draw large and enthusiastic crowds on this visit. But even some who were eager to see him were blunt in saying his personal history and liberal social stances could prove a serious, perhaps insurmountable obstacle to winning their votes.

I gave the link upthread of what is sold online at the Reagan Library and none of the books you mentioned (with the exception of Reagan's son's book) were in that list. How about YOU provide a link proving your "facts".

Also, I gave a link that Giuliani received the Reagan Medal of Freedom. That you didn't read that link is clear. So keep lying that it didn't happen, spiffboy. It shows me everything I need to know about you.

They are NOT a reliable vote and should not be counted on.

Only about 40%, no big deal.

You really are ignorant, aren't you? You're showing it in every post.

What I'm showing, by talking about Reagan's record, which was far from perfect, is that in today's climate, you purists would be hysterical over Reagan's ascendancy in the party. Since Reagan was a democrat, amnesty supporter, and tax raising politician - you'd be threatening to vote third party by now. ROFL

KLUTZ PAPER AIRPLANE GUY
FOR PRESIDENT 2008!!!

Are you with me!? Reagan admired him and thought fondly of him. He's my guy! The museum gift shop once awarded him a free cup of coffee that had an image of Ronald Reagan on the little cardboard ring they put on there so you don't burn your hands. And he knows airplanes, so he's good on national defense. I think we have a winner!

But abortion, guns and gay agenda issues make him totally liberal.

And totally unelectable in the primary.

When you're deep in the hole, you might want to stop digging. I posted photos of a number of books carried in the GIFT SHOP (check the URL on each of those photos). I posted a link to the actual list of Presidential Medal of Freedom award recipients since it was introduced by Truman. I can't believe that you're this dense. Go take a nap or something. You're embarassing yourself.

This is what's at the link to the Reagan Library's gift shop; one has to go to the bottom of the link and click on children's books to get to the kid's book you're mentioning.

But in my list below, it is headlined: RONALD REAGAN'S BOOKS:

In all the books about Reagan and presidential stuff, Rudy Giuliani's book is one of the few that don't deal with Reagan himself.

Ronald Reagan loved to tell stories... to break the ice, or to prove a point, but very often he used them to inspire, to uplift, and to remind his listeners of what matters most in life. Recently, in the archives of the Reagan Library, researcher Kiron Skinner unearthed a trove of handwritten Reagan manuscripts from the late 1970s, over 650 in all, which included some priceless examples of Reagan's storytelling abilities. Oh, you mean at the little link at the bottom of the page and then when you go to the next page you can choose Children's Books?

Oh. Okay.

Well, Rudy Giuliani's book Leadership is listed under the heading "Ronald Reagan's Books". Aside from Rudy's book, there is one written by Reagan's son and one by McCaslin. ALL the others listed under Reagan's books are about Reagan himself and presidential planes and ships.

Oh, I know it just kills you that Reagan must have thought enough of Rudy to give his books such a prominent spot on the web site. And that Rudy received the Reagan Medal of Freedom must just about kill you, but you'll just have to find a way to deal with it.

Actually, I should be on the ticket with KLUTZ PAPER AIRPLANE GUY because the Reagan Library did award me with the official U.S.S. Ronald Reagan Beanie Baby in 2004. I was greatly admired by President Reagan, apparently. Seriously, I'm not lying. I have the "award" on a shelf above my desk in my office.

Can't get away from the truth. These type of posts are the hysteric rants of desperate individuals. After the 2006 election results came in, some folks went off the deep end. Changing from mostly level headed FReepers, to off the wall loudmouths that engage in the cheap thrill of a personal pot shot. For so-called conservatives to ratchet up the anti-Reagan rhetoric to level we are at now, is something alien to me. I won't accept it. If people want to simply support Rudy and others want to criticize his record, that's where it should be left. Stick to the facts, don't obfuscate facts and let the cards fall where they may.

They are all deal breakers to me.

That's why conservatives lose elections. A certain segment has a laundry list of "deal breakers" and unless the eventual nominee passes the "deal breaker" test, they'll stay at home or cast some pathetic protest vote.

Instead of getting 90% of the pie, or even a third of a pie, they'll get 0% of the pie and think they've done a good thing for the country.

It's madness, but it's getting routine.

Again, you're just being far too dense. Are you having a stroke or something? Do you require medical attention?

You are still referring to the museum GIFT SHOP. The GIFT SHOP!!! Giuliani's book shares the same honor that the cookbook or the KLUTZ PAPER AIRPLANE BOOK has. And the beanie babies and the imprinted pencils and the coffee mugs. They are MERCHANDISE in a GIFT SHOP.

Maybe one of your Rudy-Rooter buddies can help you out. Maybe there's a neighbor you can call or something to explain this to you and to check your mental well being while they're at it.

It was kind of a cheap shot on his part.

I almost told him my contribution was that I sang lead vocals in a heavy metal band and lived in my Mom's basement. But I had to go to the store instead.

If he doesn't lighten, he has a coronary in his future.

Uh, no, spiffyboy. Once again, try a little reading comprehension.

The first page of the link I provided upthread says "RONALD REAGAN'S BOOKS" and it is under that link that Rudy Giuliani's book Leadership is the only one of 3 books listed that don't deal with Reagan himself or presidential airplanes and ships.

To get to your children's books that you seem so fond of (I can understand that's your reading comprehension level), one most go to the next page and click on Children's books.

Nice try though.
