Giuliani touts experience, but personal life may be an issue

BY CRAIG GORDON
Newsday Washington Bureau

January 28, 2007

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Rudolph Giuliani argued yesterday that his record of cutting taxes, improving security and guiding New York through 9/11 are proof that he could do the same as president - offering his strongest signal yet that he's serious about a White House bid.

[...snip]

Giuliani is trying to bat down questions from top Republicans about whether his White House ambitions are a popularity-fueled dalliance or something more serious. His speech laid out a point-by-point rationale for his possible candidacy, seeking to portray himself as a tested leader for dangerous times in the mold of Ronald Reagan.

[...snip]

He also appeared intent on quieting questions about his marital history by giving wife Judith Nathan an unusually high-profile role here. She barely left his side in public, and he called her a "partner" whom he leaned on for everything from getting through 9/11 and prostate cancer to understanding the science behind possible anthrax attacks.

Giuliani didn't mention that when Nathan helped him after his cancer diagnosis in spring 2000, he was, in fact, still married to Donna Hanover, and that the revelation of his illness came amid the messy public breakup of his second marriage.

In the end, Giuliani's two-day visit here encapsulated the promise and challenge of his possible candidacy.

On one hand, his name recognition and tough-guy image in New York, before and after 9/11, helped him draw large and enthusiastic crowds on this visit. But even some who were eager to see him were blunt in saying his personal history and liberal social stances could prove a serious, perhaps insurmountable obstacle to winning their votes.

No one is asking you to vote for him, are they?

I hate to burst your little lie. But Rudy did most certainly receive the Reagan Medal of Freedom.

No, you said he got it from Reagan.

Of course, you also said Reagan signed two abortion bills - one in 1967 and one in 1970.

Any more nonsense you wish to spread around FR like manure?

Something wrong with left wing blogs, you bigot.

In fact, you frequently attack left wing freepers.

Watch out, we know who you are.

Spiff boy doesn't seem to know that Giuliani was indeed awarded the Reagan Medal of Freedom.

But that's not what you said. You said this in post 73:

Giuliani received the Medal of Freedom from Ronald Reagan.

So once again your research is wrong. And you, in your abject political shamelessness, pretend that you DID NOT say that in post #73 and proceed to belittle Spiff, WHO WAS CORRECT.

Is this what we can expect from Rudy supporters for the next 18 months?

When you're one of the unappeasables - that's where you are.

I haven't decided who I will support. It's much too early, imo. I like Romney, too. And he gets the same crap from the unappeasables here. I don't care for McCain - but I'd vote for him if it comes to that. My view is that folks like Rudy and Romney take votes away from McCain - and I appreciate that.

The haters and spammers turn me off and I enjoy mixing it up with them. They, imo, make the GOP and conservatives look bad. They embody the sterotype.

I think that the GOP should not count on the unappeasables at all. They should reach out to the independents who were 47% of the 2006 vote.

Sorry, I call em like I see them. Guiliani is a pro-abort RINO Republican, and is fine for RINO New Yorkers but he certainly does not represent the main stream or base of the Republican party but represents its rulers at the top.

If the party is to survive it needs to stand for something.

Just because I am a devout Christian does not mean I am weak an afraid to speak the truth as I see it.

I know you just hate it that Reagan signed what was then the most liberal abortion policy in the country when he was Governor California which, in the words of Fred Barnes and other conservatives, opened the floodgates to abortion.

Reagan raised taxes 4 times as President and gave us amnesty. He'd never be elected today because the purists would be hysterical.

I know you hate having your own falsehoods thrown back in your face.

I also know you will tear down any conservative icon or value to promote your guy.

And attack people when they are right and your own damn posts supporting your positions prove you wrong.

Not to be too technical, because I know it hurts your pointy little head, but this is what Spiff boy said:

You mean that Giuliani is NOT on the list of recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom!?

Now, that Spiff, and apparently you, can't seem to do a lick of research between the 2 of you doesn't surprise me in the least. ROFL

Oh, you mean it wasn't the most liberal abortion policy in the country at the time? Why, you're just plain wrong. Again. And you know it but it just kills you that it's the truth that Reagan did indeed sign that horrible legislation.

Make no mistake about it. Most of the Giuliani cheerleading squad at FR supports him precisely because he is a radical social liberal. I've read enough of their posts over the years to know that.

Rudy-lovers and Rudy-haters have a ready-made theme song, with a bouncy ska-reggae beat.

A Message To You, Rudy

Stop your messing around
Better think of your future
Time you straightened right out
Creating problems in town

Rudy, a message to you
Rudy, a message to you

Stop your fooling around
Time you straightened right out
Better think of your future
Else you'll wind up in jail

Rudy, a message to you
Rudy, a message to you

Stop your messing around
Better think of your future
Time you straightened right out
Creating problems in town

Rudy, a message to you
Rudy, a message to you
Rudy, a message to you
Rudy, a message to you

In Jamaica, a "rudy" or "rudi" or "rude boy" is a juvenile delinquent.

I don't know if Rudy has a Presidential future. But if he does, McCain doesn't. If primary voters find the Rudy's past escapades don't count against him, who'd be left to vote for McCain, who appeals to much the same crowd as Giuliani (unless I'm missing something).

I hate to burst your little lie. But Rudy did most certainly receive the Reagan Medal of Freedom.

You said, and I QUOTE, "Giuliani received the Medal of Freedom from Ronald Reagan." You implied that Giuliani had received the Presidential Medal of Freedom because that is the ONLY Medal of Freedom that a President bestows.

HERE is a list of the recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. You will see that Giuliani is nowhere on that list.

And I mentioned in my post to you that he'd received some award from the Reagan museum:

I do notice that Giuliani received some sort of medal from the same people that run the Reagan museum gift shop that also sells his book. Maybe that's what you were talking about. Perhaps they gave him a coffee mug too with Reagan's likeness on it. Maybe this explains why they carry his book. They "awarded me" a U.S.S. Ronald Reagan Beanie Baby when I ordered a bronze Ronald Reagan bust from them once. I guess I've got your support if I decide to run for President because of the award that Ronald Reagan himself gave me - after he was dead. I keep that 'award' in my office on a shelf above my desk. I never knew that it was a qualification for running for President.

Also, with the exception of McCaslin (you're right) the only books sold at the Reagan online library are books about Reagan, ships/planes and Rudy Giuliani's book Leadership. So with the exception of McCaslin, I was correct.

Klutz Paper Airplane Guy for President 2008!!!

Your post was clearly what is called an appeal to authority. The implication of your whole Reagan Library/Giuliani book thing was to make readers of your post believe the Reagan chose Giuliani's book to be the ONLY book in the official archives other than Reagan's own books and papers. In fact, Giuliani's book is one of many others in the museum's GIFT SHOP. It's right up there with the 'Klutz Book of Paper Airplanes'. Although, I will note that the GIFT SHOP is getting $65.00 for a book that you can buy new on Amazon.com for $17.13. I guess it has a scribble from Rudy on it or something.

But by all means, keep lying to try and make your stupid little points.

It is well documented now and clearly YOU that is the liar. Rudy lies about his record and qualifications to be President. His supporters lie constantly to support his candidacy. Rudy's entire campaign is based upon lies.

Thank you for playing.

Your posts would be funny if they weren't so pathetic.

You first try to build up Rudy by showing Reagn thought highly of him.

And then you turn around and trash Reagan, which completely undermines your previous argument.

Once again, you initially said Rudy got the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Reagan. And then you turn around and say Rudy got the Reagan Medal of Freedom - after 9/11 which means he could NOT have gotten it FROM REAGAN.

Does that basic logical condradiction escape you?
