More than 1,000 take part in S.F. anti-war protest

Protesters took to the streets of downtown San Francisco this afternoon in a show of escalating discontent over President Bush's planned troop buildup in Iraq.

Some 1,500 protesters gathered around Powell and Market streets in a low-key but earnest condemnation of the administration's handling of the war effort, one of several anti-war rallies held around the country today.

Some people wore buttons reading "Purge the Surge." One was Cathy Quistgard of Santa Rosa, the mother of two Iraq war veterans who had spent a year in the same Army Special Forces unit in Baghdad.

"I hope people are starting to be more aware of what the situation is, and that we need to be out here," Quistgard said. Referring to the president, she added: "He's had a few chances already. You can't just keep trying while people's lives are at stake."

The crowd included a mix of labor union members, retirees, students and other young people.

Hmmm, I believe our pro-life rally and march from last Saturday outdrew them. In San Francisco no less. :-)

I'd bet half of them were camera people and the other half had a microphone in their hands.

"They get more than a thousand lining up every Monday, for free methadone at the clinic in the Castro..."

Nice shot and right on target.

I was gonna say, Critical Mass gets a higher turnout.

The weather may have a lot to do with it, it's gloomy and threatening to rain - if the whack jobs in SF and the East Bay are anyhing, they're "fair weather protestors".

Free Republic should hold a protest out front of wherever Cindy Sheehan is living/mooching, and keep doing it until she buys her son a headstone.

Where do you think they recruited their "protesters"?

WoW! a thousand people? On a Saturday, I'm shocked. It must be a mandate to rollover on the troops by golly!

I think there were twice as many people fighting for parking spots with me at WalMart a few hours ago

Oh No, not 1500 people in commie central. the war is over. we have failed.< /s >

Those who will not fight for life or liberty deserve neither. When the islamatards strike the left coast, I will not care or mourn. You get what your actions deserve. Your apathy will earn you a sawed off head or a burka. enjoy!

S.F. has a population of 739,426, and this is all the dummies could gather in the most liberal city in the nation. Less than .002 of the people that live in S.F.

To the dummies and trolls that read this - Hahahahahahahaha, you guys are pathetic. You can't even gather enough people to fill a high school auditorium. Dumbasses.

Fifteen hundred people. In San Francisco. On a Saturday. Are you kidding me? Mark Morford could bend over naked at Market Street and Castro and draw a bigger crowd than that. That's pathetic.

I'm sorry. San Francisco stories bring out the mischief in me.

As I said on the other thread, I checked the story and they're now saying three to five thousand. I'm not sure if even Markie could draw that kind of a crowd. But for an antiwar protest in San Francisco on a weekend, that's still just sad.

That's exactly right. There are several million people who can get to S.F. in just a few minutes via BART. They vote overwhelmingly liberal. S.F. protests are usually almost as big as the ones in D.C. and New York, and bigger than all the others. The freaks are sputtering if this is all they can draw.

How pathetic. There are a couple of 100 thousand Americans who are willing to die for the effort, and over 3,000 have.
