More than 1,000 take part in S.F. anti-war protest

Protesters took to the streets of downtown San Francisco this afternoon in a show of escalating discontent over President Bush's planned troop buildup in Iraq.

Some 1,500 protesters gathered around Powell and Market streets in a low-key but earnest condemnation of the administration's handling of the war effort, one of several anti-war rallies held around the country today.

Some people wore buttons reading "Purge the Surge." One was Cathy Quistgard of Santa Rosa, the mother of two Iraq war veterans who had spent a year in the same Army Special Forces unit in Baghdad.

"I hope people are starting to be more aware of what the situation is, and that we need to be out here," Quistgard said. Referring to the president, she added: "He's had a few chances already. You can't just keep trying while people's lives are at stake."

The crowd included a mix of labor union members, retirees, students and other young people.

Wish I'd been there, so I could've given them a purple finger.

Cathy Quistgard, fyi, a war isn't over just because you've decided it's enough and that it hasn't been all your way.

And your sons, if they truly served, they served as volunteers without your juvenile meddling.

I'm bending now so you can offer your response with a kiss you know where.

Yahell obviously wants to pad the numbers...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070127/ap_on_re_us/iraq_protest

They've been leading off every single day for the last couple of years with the deathwatch tally...No big secret where they stand...

Wonder how our FReepers are doing up there??? I heard there was supposed to be a counter protest to the horde of unwashed socialist heathens...

And as it comes to no big surprise Jane Fonda was there...

I heard she apologized for her words and actions in Vietnam during her heyday...

Yep, that was genuine...Not that I forgave her in the first place...

Wasn't there a time when there were hundreds of thousands protesting? Talk about irrelevant.

They only got 1500 people, their lowest turnout yet, and this is a show of "escalating" discontent? Riiiight.

The news media generally inflate these figures to justify their coverage. In addition, you have hundreds of curiosity seekers and tourists who have no clue what the protest is about, pickpockets, street-level drug dealers and other vendors, panhandlers and undercover cops from various agencies.

When Nixon "invaded" Cambodia 300,000 protested in SF and 1,000,000 in DC.
Less than 100,000 in DC and a piddling 1500 in SF???
THERE IS NO ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT.
1,500 in SF is 1/100th of a Gay Pride Parade. It is fewer than show up for the "critical mass" bicycle rides designed to clog downtown SF traffic.

A thousand for San Francisco?

I'd say that's a vote for the war.
