Blackanthem Military News, CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq - Iraqi Police and Marines completed Operation Three Swords in an area south of Fallujah Tuesday.  The purpose of the operation was to detain members of murder and intimidation cells within the rural area of Zaidon and the villages of Albu Hawa, Fuhaylat and Hasa.  It was led by the Iraqi Police with support from the Marines of Regimental Combat Team 6 and Marines and Soldiers of I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) Headquarters Group.

During the operation, members of the Fallujah Police Department and Coalition Forces discovered a torture house and rescued three individuals.  Two of the hostages were transported and treated at Camp Fallujah.  The third hostage was transported by helicopter to Camp Taqqadum for further treatment.  Torture devices were found and confiscated.  The house was demolished by Coalition Forces in order to remove the reminder of such violence from the landscape.  Also, one of the victims asked that it be destroyed so that no one will ever be taken there and tortured like him.

Additionally, Coalition Forces uncovered numerous weapons caches during the operation.  Among the caches, two 14.5 mm anti-aircraft guns, high explosive mortar sights, rocket propelled grenade related materials, a sniper rifle with scope and four assault rifles.   Two vehicles were also discovered in which one was rigged as a car bomb and the other with an anti-aircraft gun mounted.   The explosives were destroyed on scene by Coalition Forces and the weapons were returned to Camp Fallujah.

The Iraqi Police and Marines detained 21 individuals suspected of coordinating insurgent attacks against Iraqi Security Forces or Coalition Forces.

“This operation was successful in the fact that Coalition forces were able to free three hostages and seize weapons used for murder and intimidation away from insurgents,” said Captain Chip R. Rankin, Company B commanding officer, 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry Regiment.  “The Iraqi Police led this mission with confidence and it demonstrated their desire to provide a more secure mindset for the civilians within these areas.”

Our joint operations demonstrate the interoperability of the Marines and the Iraqi Police to remind the terrorists that their presence will not be tolerated;” said Coalition spokesperson 1st Lt. Barry L. Edwards.

Well done. Though I hope those 21 detainees equate 21 unknown bodies found in a backyard, soon...

The media and press releases will never tell us...

but I'm pretty confident those "blind-folded corpses found in Baghdad yesterday", the media decries always as civilians killed in the "civil war", are often enough terrorists/insurgents who enjoyed an "speed-trial" of the Iraqi Security Forces.

Right, they should be tried by a military tribunal first. Empanel the three highest ranking members of the squad, use the victims as witnesses, convict them, THEN execute them. Videotape the whole proceeding to show that it was not a gratuitous execution.

"Detaining" in the muslim world is the same as "detaining" illegals when caught in California. Meaningless.

I hope they tested the torture devices on those 'detained' to see if they were indeed torture devices- can't be too careful- gotta confirm.

Michael Yon writes some good stuff from Iraq in his blog. He is embedded with the Army at this time.

Go to: http://www.michaelyon-online.com/wp/desolate-roads-part-one.htm

Greetings:

After spending most of 2005 in Iraq, five months of which were in Mosul, I am back to report on the progress and obstacles. There remain only a handful of US soldiers in Mosul, and they continue to fight every day. The Iraqi Security Forces here are vastly improved from 2005. Mosul is a key and critical city in this war. The terrorists want it badly. Practically the only thing standing between Mosul and the terrorists are the Iraqis who are tired of the violence, and the small group of American soldiers who are vastly outnumbered.

I am again with an American infantry unit, this time it is the 2/7 Cavalry, based in Texas. During the first week of my embed, the battalion lost 6 soldiers killed in action, and 1 interpreter. Others were severely wounded. They also were fighting back and inflicting worse damage on the enemy. "Desolate Roads Part 1 of 2," the dispatch now posted on the site, chronicles singular moments from the past two weeks in Mosul.

My request to extend the embed with the 2/7 Cavalry has been approved and I am looking forward to being able to observe and report on the dynamic situation on the ground here. Already, two of my camera lenses, my ballistic goggles and other expensive gear have been damaged beyond repair. The support of readers will determine how much longer I will be able to continue this work.

Very Respectfully,

Michael

As I read the article it took me back some three years in time as I remember my nephew, then a Lcp in Intel/HQ unit with the 2/2 having to spend days in the town of Zaidon, and those surronding little towns as well as moving between SE Fallujah, and the roads and towns leading down to al Mahmudiya, where their original camp area was at. Being in S2 he often would go to these areas before and after skirmishes for follow up reports, and join in initial recon in some cases.
I remember as if it was yesterday how weapon caches, and goons where found in all these towns, in safe houses etc..
The cards have not really changed a bit, other then now increasingly larger numbers of trained Iraqi army and police are now sharing in what once only the Marines and a few US Army units where doing back when.
Let us hope this new mission objective agreed upon between the IG and the US will actually finally clear and control all these areas that for so long have been relatively safe areas for all forms of the insurgency and secular terrorist to move about with low probabilities of being caught.

Actually, I think that article did answer my question. Al Qaeda members were torturing people who were supporting the Iraqi gov't.

I would hope that this is part of the "mopping up." Good news is more bad guys being killed, quietly...
