Situational awareness is critical when hiding in the back country. On my last trip up Scout Mountain, we had to abandon the trip to the 8750 ft summit as bad weather started moving in. We were 1 mile from the summit. It was 10 miles back. The heavy rainfall started in the last 1/4 mile before the parking lot where our vehicle was located. It certainly could have turned out worse. We'll make the ascent again in mid-summer when the snow is mostly melted and the weather is better.

You are correct.
Backing off a climb in bad weather is very smart. The mountain peak will be there next time...we may not.
