As a joke, the two 19-year-olds billed their New Year's Eve party in an Internet invitation to friends as Night of Mayhem. Later, of course, that didn't seem so funny.
The evening in a three-story Edwardian home in San Francisco's Richmond District began as a gathering of college kids who had graduated from one of the city's oldest private high schools, St. Ignatius College Preparatory.
Guests of honor were members of the Baker's Dozen, an all-male a cappella group from Yale College that was in the city on a tour.
The night ended with one member of the Baker's Dozen suffering a broken jaw, another receiving a concussion and others sustaining bruises after they encountered a 19-year-old uninvited guest at the party and then met some of his friends on the street outside.
In the nearly four weeks since the party, a controversy has erupted over the fact that four alleged assailants, detained briefly by police at the scene, have not been charged. The incident has sparked media attention across the country, prompting questions about how the Police Department responded and what Chief Heather Fong and Mayor Gavin Newsom had to say about it.
Yale College Dean Peter Salovey has said he is "shocked and appalled" by what transpired in San Francisco.
Sean Hannity, a conservative Fox News talk show host, noted that the Yale singers were insulted and attacked right after singing "The Star-Spangled Banner." He offered a $10,000 reward for a witness who would help convict the assailants, saying: "You know, America is still a country where you can sing the national anthem and not be attacked viciously like this."

My cousins all went to St. Ignatius (in fact, they lived right across the street from it). This was back in the day, when sanity more often prevailed, of course.
Am I missing something? Nobody deserves to get beat up, but when there are so many more important things going on in this world, why is this still national news? I couldn't figure out why this was on TV when it happened, and I don't know why I am still reading about it on FR three weeks later.
Rich DeLeon is an SFSU "professor" of political science. Progressive political sciences.
Looky here from the SFSU campus newspaper, 2004:
Spring University elections
Nominations of faculty members are being accepted for the following University-wide positions: Academic Affirmative Action Committee (two positions)
**
In 1996, Californian's adopted into the state constitution Prop 209-banning racial/gender preferences involving state monies.
And SFSU, for one entity named, simply refuses to acknowledge what's in the state constitution.
His word on this matter of what went down in San Francisco is crap.
What a hoot to learn about politics and from people who don't even obey much less respect the law.
The main reason is because it appears that the thugs were politically connected, so that the cops turned a blind eye to an aggravated assault.
Some guests were beaten brutally in San Francisco, and a coverup begins.
San Francisco is a safe, lovely, town but for whom?
Only thing the SF "elite" are worried about now? How can they continue to keep tourists coming to the City; and how they can force all other Californians in the state to pay for whatever the Elite in SF "want" and "demand".
49ers wanna leave SF. What's di-fi do? Pass a special law to demand they have to stay.
Gotta keep those reasons for "guests" to keep on comin' into the uber-safe city, right?
Um, what Big Guy?
Only one Big Guy that I know of who has those weapons in his arsenal. But He's worried about collateral damage.
Having lived in the Mission district and gone to some of those schools, I think the school rivalry had nothing to do with this. This was just plain old garden-variety laziness of the san francisco cops who NEVER want to get involved in anything except the easiest no-brainer cases and those cases which help them politically. since they didn't see themselves as having anything to gain from bringing these thugs to justice, they stayed out of it and called it all mutual and unsolvable. they didn't want to get involved. this is SO san francisco cop behavior. the only thing those guys care about is their pension. that's why they did nothing. they see less risk to their pensions by doing nothing than by doing their jobs. they are union scum, and despite having been part of this crowd, i really genuinely don't like them.
why is it national news? Here's my theory: because it goes on over and over and over and over again. the san francisco cops are incredibly politicized and they do this all the time. i was the victim of a lot of crimes there and politics as well as institutional laziness always trumped law enforcement. these bastards don't believe in doing their job, that's why and that is why crime is hogwild there. that affects property values, types of crimes committed and the federal funding. i'm ok with this as a national story, this kind of garbage goes on all the time in that city and i am pleased to see the spotlight as bright as possible on these politicized dirtbags.
i even lived in that cali-15th st neighborhood at one time - i lived near di-fi's house.
(I've lived in the Sunset, Haight, Richmond, and Presidio Heights districts (as well as the Presidio)).
