You have the facts wrong. According to exit polls, Democrat turnout was up, Republican turnout was down. Independent turnout was unchanged. Voters who identified themselves as conservatives was down. Voters who identified themselves as moderates was up. Voters who identified themselves as liberal was up. Libertarian turnout is not measured and for good reason.

Alas, your facts are wrong. What happened was independents abandoned the GOP enough to cause about a 3.5% vote drop in the GOP totals, which was worth 30 House seats and senate seats. Absent gerrymandering, it kind of swing, a 7% swing, would have cost more like 45 seats.
