New York, N.Y. (CNSNews.com) - While the national Republican platform is decidedly pro-life and has been for the past two decades, the GOP mayor of the nation's largest city believes his party's philosophical underpinnings are more in tune with the pro-abortion point of view.
New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said favoring the availability of abortion is "more consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party."
Giuliani made his eyebrow-raising remarks at an awards luncheon April 6 sponsored by the National Abortion Rights Action League in New York City, a leading abortion group.

Kelli Conlin, the executive director of the New York chapter of NARAL, applauded Giuliani's views. She called the mayor "a great advocate for us," and said it was "unfortunate the leadership of the GOP has moved into a direction where they want to implant government control on the lives of women and on reproductive freedom."
Although some of the state's top Republicans favor the availability of abortion - both Giuliani and Gov. George Pataki are supporters of abortion rights - their views on the issue are not shared by all in the New York GOP.
"Rudy Giuliani is not the poster child for the Republican Party. His values are completely out-of-step with the views of the GOP," said Lori Hougen, spokesperson for the New York chapter of the National Right to Life.

My guess is because Giuliani is doing well amongst Republicans, and this is an attempt to decrease his momentum leading up to the primaries.

Mitt Romney's comments from 1994 have certainly been widely discussed!
Now, before anyone questions the nearly 1,000,000 abortion is NYC during Rudy's term in office, let me say that I got that number by going through the New York State Department of Health's Vital Statistics of New York which recorded the number of abortions in New York counties and in New York City itself.
That's what I was wondering...
Amen, amen, amen! What good is it to support the war on terror, but turn a blind eye toward the killing of innocents, let alone supporting it. McCain or Romney would be far more preferable if we have to bite the bullet and support one of the Big Three.
As an elected Republican, he endorsed ultra-liberal Democrats including Bill Clinton.
Rudy threw himself into the anti-family Planned Parenthood lifestyle and callously dumped wives for girlfriends---Rudy even tried to throw his wife AND HIS CHILDREN out of the Mayoral mansion, so he could move his mistress in.
Rudy willingly (perhaps gleefully) stomped on family values, he thumbed his nose at social conservatives, and he supported abortion on demand and gay rights (even though he had no legislative or official mandate to do so).
Now Rudy Rooters keep whining that he's being trashed.
Any trashing he's getting now, Rudy himself invited.
It's too bad Rudy didn't heed the following admonition: "Be careful who you step on, on the way up, because you are going to meet them on the way down."
I guess I might as well give up and vote for Hillary.
Oh boy... Houston, we have a problem!
because he's a third party supporter
I don't care if it's 1 , children are our future,we can't kill them off..
For flame war purposes!
Look at the invite to man himself a team.

Rudy's right.
Freedom and independence are incompatible with social-'conservatism'.
Bush has done his part by picking two anti-abortion judges for the Supreme Court. We need one more pick for SOTU to overturn Roe v. Wade. How will we get that pick with Guiliani in the White House?
LOL! Is that right?
Oh, I didn't notice that. *sighs* This is gonna be a nasty campaign...and it's still almost two years away.
How do you get it with Hillary? FWOW, we lost our best current chance when November's election went to the democrats.
From what I've read, Rudy would appoint SCOTUS Justices like Scalia, Roberts and Alito, with Scalia being his favorite.
SOTU should be SCOTUS, darn sticky keyboard.
And you are a liar.
