British historian David Irving, who was jailed for questioning the Holocaust in a book published in Austria, said Friday that the Auschwitz death camp was a tourist attraction, and added that there was no proof that it ever had gas chambers.
Irving, whose comments during an interview with Italy's Sky TG24 News were immediately picked up by Italian news agencies, said there was no doubt the Nazis killed millions of Jews, but said the killings did not take place at Auschwitz.
"At Auschwitz they did not have gas chambers, or at least there is no proof that I am satisfied with," Irving told the news channel's program, "Controcorrente." Irving spoke in English, but his comments were translated by a voiceover.
Irving was sentenced in February 2006 to three years under a 1992 Austrian law that applies to "whoever denies, grossly plays down, approves or tries to excuse" the Nazi genocide or other Nazi crimes against humanity in a print publication, broadcast or other media.
He was released last month after Vienna's highest court granted his appeal and converted two-thirds of his three-year sentence into probation. He has been indefinitely banned from Austria.
The Italian government will propose legislation this week making it a crime to deny the Holocaust.

Idiot.
"It wasn't a concentration camp. It was a resort".
I propose he emigrates to Iran, where he can work as Ahamdinejad's private History teacher.
Yeah, tourist attraction is a bit over the top even for Irvings supporters.
IG Auschwitz was 100% subsidiary of IG Farben, the worlds largest industrial complex for manufacturing synthetic gasoline and rubber for the conquest of Europe.
On March 1st, 1941, Heinrich Himmler, the Reichsführer of the SS, inspected the construction site.
On April 14th, 1941 Otto Ambros, the IG Farben board member responsible for the Auschwitz project, stated to his IG Farben board colleagues in Ludwigshafen, our new friendship with the SS is a blessing. We have determined all measures integrating the concentration camps to benefit our company.
The pharmaceutical departments of the IG Farben cartel used the victims of the concentration camp in their own way: thousands of them died during human experiments such as the testing of new and unknown vaccines.
The Nuremberg War Criminal Tribunal convicted 24 IG Farben board members and executives for mass murder, slavery and other crimes against humanity. Amazingly however, by 1951 all of them had been released and were working for German Corporations again.
The Nuremberg Tribunal divided the IG Farben into Bayer, Hoechst, and BASF. Today each of the three daughters of the IG Farben is 20 times as big as the IG Farben mother was at its height in 1944, the last year of the Second World War.
More importantly, the chairmen of the boards, the highest positions in BASF, Bayer and Hoechst, were occupied by former members of the Nazi-Party for almost three decades after the Second World War.
Will Ahmadinejad be subject to arrest if he sets foot in Austria or italy?
Thank you for the information.
You have to wonder what's wrong with the minds of people like this.
Wow.
This guy is clueless. If he would like to see proof, I'll scan the picures from when my husband was there. I'm a believer, I saw the ovens. They were used.

FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel/Russian Jewry ping list.
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
Two things bug me about this article. The first is the guy's an idiot. The second is putting the guy in jail for being an idiot !!!
I propose Italy make it a crime to deny it.
I don't know if this change is due to senility, venality, or a brain tumor, but it is bizarre. I'm sure you can quibble about whether 6.5 million died in the Holocaust, or only 4.7 million, but that misses the point. It happened. My mother had a cousin, in the British Army, who passed through Belsen just after it was liberated. He had nightmares for years.
What a jackass!
Has he ever talked to the Holocaust survivors who were actually there and saw their friends and relatives taken from them and killed?
Has he ever talked with any of the American GIs who liberated concentration camps?
Has he ever seen the pictures of the "living dead" who were liberated?
Has he ever talked to people who went into the crematoriums twenty years later and could still smell the stench?
Has he ever wondered about the absolute evidence (provided by meticulous German record keeping) of the Zyclon-B being delivered?
Must have gotten his information from Jimmy Carter and Pat Buchanan.
There are Germans who saw the gas chambers in operation. By why argue with idiots? Better to laugh at them.
A fundamental principle of politically correct thought is the criminalization of unpopular viewpoints.
A government becomes totalitarian when it limits the expression of thoughts that are in conflict with cherished beliefs. We have 3 excellent examples here in the US: global warming, abortion and evolution.
Those holding views in conflict with these 3 pillars of liberal thought are considered intellectually challenged, are treated as enemies of the Constitution, and may lose their employment. Imprisonment is not far off.
I agree with you. Criminalizing idiocy is idiocy. Along with Jews, Gypsys and cripples, retarded people were rounded up and imprisoned in Auschwitz.
Disneyland for Nazis.
