It looks like a giant snapper. I could be wrong, though. Does anybody know what this is?

Looks like a goliath grouper, or jewfish.

They get big, really big.

Don't know for sure, am not an icthylogist.

It's a grouper. Common in the Gulf of Mexico but not that big. Good eating, too.

I suspect he ate at least a few fisherman while growing up that big. No idea how many he killed while being caught.

Am I mistaken or is the Jewfish now a protected species in the US?

In Texas now they are catch & release only.

Yup ... a Jewfish .. which is a just a big Grouper. Common as mosquitoes here in Florida. Now where's my cocktail sauce?
