....According to a statement released Tuesday, Hunter will make his announcement at the Marriott Renaissance Park hotel in the South Carolina city of Spartanburg located in the states overwhelmingly Republican northwestern region......
The 58-year-old Hunter, a 14-term incumbent who chaired the Armed Services Committee prior to the Democrats House takeover and now is its ranking member, is campaigning both on his hawkish views on defense issues and his equally staunch conservatism on financial and social issues.
Hunter, who has served on the Armed Services Committee since he was elected to Congress in 1980, has a personal background of military service as a member of the Army from 1969 to 1971. He received a Bronze Star for participating in 25 helicopter combat assaults during the war in Vietnam.....
Along with his defense posture, Hunter is a fervent opponent of illegal immigration, and reaffirmed his socially conservative platform Monday on the anniversary of the Supreme Courts 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion.
Hunter, according to the Associated Press, told participants of the March for Life anti-abortion rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.: If we have a judicial applicant, a judicial nominee who can look at a sonogram of an unborn child and not see the value of human life ... if I should become president of the United States, he will not receive a judicial appointment.
Hunter enters relatively unknown outside defense-related circles......
Last week, though, Hunter took a swipe at McCain by releasing a straw poll taken in Arizonas Maricopa County , in which Hunter finished first and the homestate senator ran fourth. Though Republicans in the states most populous county called the results surprising, McCains maverick tendencies have angered members of his party in the past.

Unphased? Please tell me that is not the actual headline from the NY Times.
click on link
Holy crap, it is.
Wow...
Really epic spelling error by the New York Times in the headline..
It's "Unfazed" not "Unphased."
Yeah I assumed it was mistyped by the poster or was their own headline, but no - it's right there on the NYT site.
That's a small-county weekly paper type spelling error.
Looking around, there IS a gene named "unphased" so the spellcheck may not have been triggered.
That's what happens when you replace editors with spell-checkers.
Another sign the paper is going down the toilet.
Beat me to it! What a bonehead mistake. Jayson Blair must be back.
I don't believe you have any real chance, Duncan Hunter, but Godspeed to ya!
Good luck to a good man!
Maybe their beebers were set on stun.
How did it get by a roomful of editors? Unbelievable!
I like the sound of this guy!
"Unphased"
Beebers set to stune.
They all got laid off. A few months after the fact-checkers were laid off.
Look, the guy is simply not presidential material. He's been in Washington for 28 years - voters prefer an outsider, such as a Governor usually. There's the questionable ties to Cunningham & Abramhoff.
This run is all about him getting his name out there as a conservative alternative. His job is to push Rudy/Romney to the right a little more, so one of them will be more electable to conservatives. Then he's going to hope that he's chosen for one of the aforementioned positions.
I'll have to take a serious look at this guy. I have barely heard his name before.
Oh, please give us a true conservative in this growing sea of liberals and socialists.
I think you have that right, and I hope Duncan Hunter can hang in there. He will need to catch on fire soon with serious money contributors to remain viable.
I note that this NYT article mentioned every potential GOP candidate, well-known and obscure, except no mention of Mitt Romney. I believe that was intentional. The NYT is likely doing its best to keep Romney's name out of sight.
I don't want Romney, I don't want Rudy, but I'd darned sure vote for Duncan Hunter! Conservatives cry about not having a candidate. Well..here he is...now its up to the conservatives to get him into office.
After Rudy McRomney splits the rino vote Hunter will rally the conservatives in SC and go on to win it all.
Everybody likes an underdog.
Go Hunter.
It will be a very difficult task in '08 to keep a far leftist Democrat out of the White House. Depending on the outcome in Iraq, not since the 1964 Johnson vs. Goldwater landslide have Democrats had a better election environment than they will in '08. The GOP must nominate an exceptionally good candidate with a top notch campaign organization.
Well ya know what? If McCain,Rudy, and Mitt are the best that the conservatives can do...I guess there will be a democrat in the white house.
I am sick to death of people saying ..oh man, we need a conservative..then ya get one handed to ya. But no..that's just a teaser..when push comes to shove any ole fart wearing a republican hat will do..well no thank you..been there..done that..never again.
It amazes me that republican know it alls can lose as big as they did and STILL not get it. That ole..hey, its YOUR fault if a democrat gets in because you wouldn't vote for the republican candidate is a worn out and useless guilt trip trick. I ain't buyin' it this time boys. Which one of the three above mentioned wantabe candidates is the conservative? Gonna have to throw alot of white wash on one of em to get that pulled off.
I am voting for a conservative if I have to write him in..and I guess I can "waste" my own danged money on him if I want to.
