Marcelino Ramos, 49, who killed a Taco Bell employee in 1979, had spent 27 years awaiting execution. By BRIAN JOSEPH The Orange County Register SACRAMENTO – An Orange County murderer who was one of death row's longest-serving inmates was found dead Monday in his San Quentin cell.

Marcelino Ramos, 49, was unresponsive when a guard spoke to him at about 3:30 p.m. He was rushed to the prison infirmary, where he was declared dead a short time later.

The cause of death is unclear. San Quentin spokesman Lt. Eric Messick said Ramos lived alone in his East Block cell and his body showed no signs of trauma. Marin County Assistant Coroner Gary Tindel said Ramos had a history of heart problems.

Ramos was condemned after he held up a Santa Ana Taco Bell in 1979 and ordered two employees to "say your prayers" before shooting them. Manager trainee Katherine Augusta Parrott, 20, died; cook Kevin Pickrell, then 18, survived.

27 years . . . 7 years longer than his murder victim had on earth and about 26 years too long.

I think every death row inmate should be provided with a noose, a stool and a strong enough beam in their cell to off themselves.

Then, to encourage them to do so, a memorial plaque for every former resident of the cell who did it. Who knows but that staring at those plaques 23 hours a day might reduce some of the overcrowding in their cell block?

Go kill someone and see how nice they are. I'm sure you'll love it.

What would McCoy say? If it's Bones from Star Trek he would say "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not an undertaker!"

Here's an ipix virtual tour of a death row cell in florida. Retro design, vaulted ceilings, cozy trundle bed, stainless steel sink and toilet, convenient towel rack, "hope chest", sturdy steel fireproof doors...
a steal at twice the price.
