"If you can go toe-to-toe with liberals in Massachusetts and New York City and acquit yourself well, you are prepared for D.C.," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.
**
Mead credits Giuliani with mental toughness rare among elected officials. Instead of seeking consensus, Giuliani openly defied many of the city's leading liberals on crime and welfare reform.
"Giuliani confronted not only the bureaucracy, but the community groups and the academics and the journalists and all those who said you couldn't be tough on the poor," Mead said. "He said that you can be you can demand that they play by the rules. And he got away with it."
**
"It's very difficult for such a person to win Republican primaries," said Jack Pitney, a professor of politics at Claremont McKenna College.
Difficult, but not impossible, Norquist said. As an example, he pointed to Ronald Reagan.
"Reagan passed the most liberal abortion laws in the country and the most liberal divorce laws in the country as governor (of California), and then ran as the pro-life, social-conservative presidential candidate," Norquist said.

Giuliani's sharp-edge personality is another wild card. He sometimes rubs people, especially journalists, the wrong way.
On the other hand, his toughness might appeal to like-minded conservatives.
"A nice person couldn't have done what Giuliani did in New York," Mead said. "You needed a pit bull. Giuliani is a pit bull."

Choosing a conservative candidate based on what he MSM is feeding you rather than solid conservative principles is a very dangerous policy. Allowing even a little of our rights, like the second amendment, to be eroded will forever be a loss.
There is no way I would vote for a pro gay, pro illegal, pro abortion anit gun liberal like Rino Rudy. I suspect there are many more like me.
(((((PING-A-RUDY!)))))))
Did you look at the poll?
Thanks Bunny Slippers - I pinged the GiuliARMY!
The poll posted is conducted NOW, when the praise of rudy the rino is still flowing.
Try that poll again against the democrat when the media has exposed all of rudy's warts to the public.
It's not a line, it's the truth.
If you're getting tired of hearing the truth, perhaps you should reconsider who you're supporting.
Conservative, limited government values win elections for republicans. Plus the core of the GOP's power base is in the south now. Rudy holds values repugnant to most of them.
Run him for president and watch them stay home. Don't believe it can happen? Look who is in control of congress now after the republicans went native.
I've seen lots of MSM rudy polls, and trust the MSM less with each one.
He is. He will split the base of the party, and when the base is split we lose.
What do you have to refute the assertion?
Oh yeah, your name sure seems at odds with suport of Rudy, who will do nothing to increase your freedoms, but has proven to be against constitutionally guaranteed freedoms. Howabout them apples?
You should read up on the stats on the 2006 election! REPUBLICANS DID NOT STAY HOME - they went to the polls and voted straight Republican - it was Independents and Moderates fed up with Republicans and Social Conservative'ss "holier than thou" attitude (when in turned out that they were just as corrupt and greedy as the Democrats) that made them turn to the Democrats. They were teaching us a lesson. And if you think a Social Conservative will win in 2008 you are very much mistaken. independents and Moderates who hold the deciding vote in a presidential election will not elect one in 2008. Maybe in 2012 we can elect one but not in 2008. There needs to be someone who can pull in the moderates, Independents and Blue-Dog Democrats and Rudy can do that.
Most of the anti-Rudy people are the anti-Rino, more-conservative-than-thou Republicans who want a STRCT social conservative.
Not all, but most of them, supported Alan Keyes a couple of presidential elections ago even though Keyes was never electable.
The Unappeasables need to understand what the word VIABLE in the term "viable candidate" means.
The ramming down our throats of Rino Rudy (St Rudy the Hitlery Slayer to his supporters) continues. But ask yourself this what happens if Hitlery does not win the rat nomination?
I am not unappeasable, but I know when someone crosses to many of my lines. Rino Rudy is as liberal as Hitlery.
You wish. He's not going to do the job you've been working so hard at ever since you signed up. All day, every day, you post against various GOP candidates (usually the frontrunner in whatever race your trolling), never in support. Oh sure, when confronted you'll sometimes respond with a fig leaf cover that you actually support conservative X, but your posting history outs you.
Would you be happy with Obama?
Are you talking about fiscally or socially?
Want a more meaningful poll?
Find out who would vote for an unnamed conservative Republican versus Hillary or Obama (or Mitt and McCain, for that matter). I seriously doubt the results would be much different.
As for me, I am a gunowner, as is my Right, and I wouldn't vote for anyone on that list on a bet.
She won't get it! Besides, it would lead to the greatest slaughter of a democrat if she did. She is so divisive and hated by the majority, and half the minority would never vote a female as president.
