New Rasmussen Poll: Poll: Giuliani 30% McCain 22%

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone poll shows that former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) continues to hold an eight-point lead over Senator John McCain (R) in the race for the Republican nomination. Giuliani now earns 30% of the vote, up from 28% a week ago. John McCain (R) has support from 22% while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich remains in third at 12%.

Former Massachusetts Mitt Romney is back in double digits at 10%. Another former Governor Mike Huckabee registers just 2% as does Senator Sam Brownback. Senator Chuck Hagel registers support from 1% of GOP voters.

While McCain continues to hold a solid second place in this polling, a separate survey shows he has lost ground in general election match-ups. In fact, for the first time in any Rasmussen Reports polling, McCain has fallen behind a Democratic competitor, trailing both Illinois Senator Barack Obama and former North Carolina Senator John Edwards. McCain may be hampered by the situation in Iraq (considered the most important issue by voters). Most Americans believe we should be reducing the number of U.S. troops fighting in that country while McCain supports the President’s call for more troops.

Giuliani continues to lead all Democrats--see a summary of these match-ups along with favorability ratings and perceptions of the candidates’ ideology. A summary is also provided for Democratic contenders.  

While Giuliani has consistently led in polls of potential GOP primary voters, there is an intense debate among political observers as to whether the former Mayor of New York can actually win the nomination. Those who say Giuliani cannot win point to his views on key social issues and his own lifestyle which includes multiple marriages and divorces. Others say that Giuliani’s leadership quotient and charisma will overcome those points for Republicans fearful of seeing a Democrat in the White House.

Conservative need to learn that they are the GOP Kingmakers but not KingPICKERS. They have enough numbers and power in the party to throw the primary elections to any strong candidate they want but they do not have enough power to choose anyone they want (Sorry no President Duncan Hunter in this Universe, try an alternate one.) If there were a strong candidate who was a conservative then we (I'm one too) could push him forward and life would be wonderful, but there isn't one this time. Rudy is a conservative disaster. McCain is so unpredictable he could be another Reagan or another LBJ depending on how he wakes up each day. Romney is probably the best hope for conservatives but they have to be willing to accept the conservative message he is preaching today and not insist that he live by his old liberal Mass. or wishy-washy policies and statements. If the man wants to be a conservative for God sake let him. None of the other strong candidates even want to be conservatives.

I think he's STILL hooked on the stuff, since he acts like a freakin' EUNICH when it comes to almost any issue considered conservative.

Last minute, "jailhouse"-like conversions won't work either. It's TOO LATE for RINO-Rudy to grow a pair and differentiate himself from the garden-variety demonRAT.

NO to any and all RINOs (especially those from The Peoples Republic of NYC).

It is still more then a year from the first primary. Plenty of time to get his name out. I recently gave a sum of money to help in that. My wallet is closed to Rino Rudy.

And it's only 10:30 Tuesday. There were be a dozen more before the day is out. A hundred more before the week is out. A thousand more before the month is over (and it is already the 23rd). Two hundred million before the actual 08 voting begins.

The party that appeals to the centrist view point will win. That view point includes celebrity candidates only. Long shots don't stand a chance.

Rudy may have lost to Hillary in Bright RED NYS. I live in NY and the voters are wacky, they voted for an admitted thief for comptroller.

By not running Rudy preserved his political viability to face her in the BIG contest....this one for President in which he has a much better chance of winning against her as the voters across the country are more sensible on a whole than the idiots in NY.

I don't know about you, but I am really impressed by the quality of the Rudyhaters...they don't resort to innuendo and irrational debate the way the Democrats do. Speaks highly for the Republicans and FR.

That is minor with today's technology. With the right campaign, a person could become a household name almost overnight. Obama did. Bill Clinton did.

The necessary thing is to have a position that gives one numbers and financial support. If a person starts getting the numbers, the financial support will follow. [Newsbreaker yesterday: Soros money is now going to Obama, not Hillary. That, of course, could change on a moments notice.] Money will follow any candidate who garners favorable numbers.

Just a yell sank Howard Dean.
Swiftboats sank John Kerry.
Macaca sank George Allen.
Don't underestimate the frivolousness of the American people.

 

All true but I would make the argument that those candidacies died not because of yelling, swiftboats or maccaca, but because the candidates response or lack of response to each. Kerry waited way too long to answer the Swiftboaters, and when he did he bumbled it with dishonesty and faux outrage. I think a lot of people who could have cared less what Kerry did or did not do 30 years ago in Vietnam were disgusted by his weaseling in the present day. Look how much better GWB handled his Vietnam "scandal." He was firm, forthcoming  and resolute, didn't appear to be hiding something and despite the best efforts of the MSM it didn't hurt him. George Allen took the "Trent Lott" strategy of "I'm so sorry, really sorry, I didn't know any better, did I mention how sorry I was" and got the Trent Lott results. Rudy I think could handle scandal well as he has in the past. McCain has managed his Keating Scandal involvement successfully for 20 years although he is an odd one and could self destruct at any moment. Romney doesn't seem to have any scandals but if one came up he seems to have the silver tongue to diffuse it.
