CONTROVERSIAL Muslim cleric Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilali has won an Australia Day award - as the country's Un-Australian of the Year.

The Mufti of Australia was awarded the gong by men's magazine Zoo Weekly for a series of controversial remarks over the past year, including that women invited rape by the way they dressed and that Muslims had more right to live in Australia than those with convict ancestors.

He headed a list of the magazine's tongue-in-cheek top 10, released today ahead of Thursday's Australian of the Year Awards.

Zoo Weekly features editor Gregor Stronach described the magazine's nominees as those who deserved "a tonk over the head" for not displaying "good old-fashioned Aussie values".

He said it appeared Sheik Hilali had been campaigning for the prize with his comments.

"It doesn't get any more un-Australian than that," he said.

Feminist author Germaine Greer claimed the second spot for saying the animal kingdom had taken its revenge on Steve Irwin following his freak death from a stingray barb to the heart.

How on Earth does he get that Muslims have more of a right to live there than those whos' ancestors where sent there?

Is there some Muslims right to sand we don't know about. (no insult to Australia is meant by that comment, just every picture I've seen shows very rocky, sandy places.)
