Are the American people ready for an elected president who was educated in a Madrassa as a young boy and has not been forthcoming about his Muslim heritage?

This is the question Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s camp is asking about Sen. Barack Obama.

An investigation of Mr. Obama by political opponents within the Democratic Party has discovered that Mr. Obama was raised as a Muslim by his stepfather in Indonesia. Sources close to the background check, which has not yet been released, said Mr. Obama, 45, spent at least four years in a so-called Madrassa, or Muslim seminary, in Indonesia.

"He was a Muslim, but he concealed it," the source said. "His opponents within the Democrats hope this will become a major issue in the campaign."

Like I said before, I think the Hillary camp is hoping to get a strong reaction from conservatives about this so she can come out shortly as the ROP candidate and blast anti-Islamists as bigots.

We wouldn't vote for him anyway. Insight is a subsidiary (?) of The Washington Times so for them to go there with this new discovery of theirs is suspicious.

According to the New York Post, Obama says he never attended a madrassa, and the Clinton camp denies any involvement in spreading this crap.

And it is crap, even if it is true. No middle of the road voter is going to vote against Obama because at one point, through no choice of his own, he may have attended a Muslim school. It's not like an elementary school student has any say as to where he attends school. And he certainly didn't choose his father. All these types of articles do is allow Obama to paint his opponents as bigots.

Focus on Obama's ultra-liberal record, which, while scant, has enough to make any conservative shudder. He is not a closet Muslim.

I never said that those who are questioning Obama's religion are bigots - just that Obama will USE articles like this to PAINT his opponents as bigots, even if they are not.

I don't understand why anyone should be questioning Mitt Romney being a Mormon. We crossed that bridge in 1960 - those who opposed a candidate based on his particular type of Christian faith lost that election. I predict that making an issue of Obama's supposed Muslim faith (or Romney's Mormanism) will have the same effect - it will backfire, making him more sympathetic in the eyes of the average voter. The average American voter is a lot more tolerant about a candidate's religious beliefs than many FReepers seem to think.
