Hands Up If You've Lost The Plot (Ahmadinejad)

Hands up if you've lost the plot By Gethin Chamberlain, Sunday Telegraph Last Updated: 12:02am GMT 21/01/2007Page 1 of 3

First, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad alienated the rest of the world with his religious extremism, nuclear ambitions and global grandstanding. Now, due to domestic failures and economic incompetence, he is doing the same to ordinary Iranians

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been blamed for Iran's woes

Imagine you are the president of Iran. You awake to discover that a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is heading in your direction, as is a new anti-missile defence system to protect your neighbours from the missiles you plan to point at them.

A bad week? Not really, because you have just taken delivery of a new missile system of your own. You have Iraq in the palm of your hand and you have just returned from a nice jaunt to South America, where you made new friends who share your loathing of the Great Satan.

You are ready to bask in the warm glow of admiration. And then you discover that the price of tomatoes has trebled in a month and your supporters have deserted you.

Had Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spent less time goading the Americans, and more time studying their democratic process, he might have picked up the lesson that George W Bush's father learnt the hard way from Bill Clinton in 1992: "It's the economy, stupid."

Ahmadinejad came to power in 2005 promising to use oil money to cut the gap between rich and poor. If he has succeeded, it is only because both groups are now struggling to make ends meet.

Perhaps I am alone in thinking this but I think "the stinky man in the members only jacket" has a very limited time left here on Earth and will be very dead, very soon.

EXCERPT: Had he nailed the economics, his critics might have had more stomach for his political grandstanding and nuclear brinkmanship. Instead, while the Iranians are at the Americans' throats throughout the region, internal inflation and unemployment are running at 30 per cent and rents and property prices are 40 per cent higher than six months ago. Even former supporters are questioning whether turning the entire United Nations Security Council against Iran was a bright idea.

The Iranian government is as fiscally backward as it is spiritually bankrupt. Government regulated subsidies on basic commodities is used to maintain a strict policy of isolationism. The last thing the government of Iran would do is directly empower the Iranian people by fostering a free market. Granted the economics of the Bazaar leave much to be desired, fascist Ayatohlahs who believe "the economy is for donkeys"; can only hurt. The fact is, without oil and gas revenue the Iranian government couldn't exist the way is has for so long. The Iranian regime has the heart of a zombie pumping black blood to survive.

Yes, MyGodIGottaGetAJob is probably heading for hell. Unfortunately, people like him tend to take lots of other people out with him. The question is, who will those people be?

Iranians have a reputation of being a fairly well educated people with some cosmopolitan aspects to their society. With unemployment at 40% and a large number of that being educated people is it any wonder they are now questioning ole Aminejhad and his quest to antagonize the United States into a conflict.

Yes, and he just might attempt it. Actually, I'm curious why he hasn't made the attempt already. If he couldn't actually carry it out himself, I'm sure that North Korea would be more than happy to lend him the material and the means.

I suppose they could head for Turkey..... No, that isn't a good idea either.

Pakistan? Oops, they got nukes....No.

Azerbajan? Allied with Turkey, US, and Israel, and adjascent to a large section of Iran that is both oil rich and majority Azerbajani, so that could lead to separatist pressures inside Iran.

Only 51% of Iran is Persian. Most of the nuclear rhetoric is for domestic consumption.

Afghanistan or Iraq?

Pakistan? They are ripe for a fundi muzzi takeover, but it must be done carefully, since they have nukes. Or if feeling really adventurous, Armenia, Azerbaijan, or Turkmenistan.

I also read that Iran is set to implement gas rationing in March. If I were an ordinary Iranian, I would quickly tire of some midget A$$ Clown with a messiah complex jetting off to far flung capitals & making gradiose promises (with MY tax dollars) while my standard of living goes down the toilet. Oh, and there is that little part about wiping Israel off the map. While a Jihadi might be gung-ho for that, they can't be so stupid as to think that Iran will walk away from that unscathed. Having your country turned into a radioactive sheet-of-glass might be too high a price to pay for their leader's religious fantasies.
