Militia fighters attacked a provincial headquarters in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, killing five American soldiers today, the U.S. military reported.
The statement said "an illegally armed militia group" attacked the building with grenades, small arms and "indirect fire," which usually means mortars or rockets.
"A meeting was taking place at the time of the attack to ensure the security of Shiite pilgrims participating in the Ashoura commemorations," said Brig. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, deputy commander for Multi-National Division-Baghdad.
Brooks said the meeting was taking place in the Provincial Joint Coordination Center in Karbala when the attack occurred. Iraqi officials and security forces as well as U.S. troops were present, he said.

There is a Counterinsurgency specialist named David Kilcullen the Pentagon is now taking heed of. Kilcullen calls the insurgency a "enhanced cadre system". The Typical insurgent cell is 5-8 members who are loosely connected for brief periods during an up tempo moment then disband after an operation. The can form up for larger operations if need be. Their logistics are minimal and their intel structure ubiguitous. ( The Iraqi Police and Interior Ministry folks)

10-15% of the "guards" will be working for the insurgents or militias.

Maliki had better get off his fat A Rab ass and start demanding his Interior and Defense Ministers demand all in their quarters of the IG, to work closely with the Iraqi Army, Police, and Coalition forces to start taking out all the shit heads that fill the capital and surronding cities with their filthy bodies. This crap has to stop.
One has to go in and literally start taking these places apart. Abram tanks, artillery, and air to ground in relentess fashion.
Take out a few blocks of Sadr city literally, e.g. flatten it as an example of what will start to happen if Iraqi of all persuations do not start to single out the hahji.
As many Freepers have said over and over again over a few year period. They only know how to react when the barrel of a gun is put to their stupid heads. General Mattis's use silk gloves if possible did not work with a lot of them. So now the gloves must come off once and for all.
If Maliki does not lead his IG to stop this crap over the next few months then I do hope GWB shall drop the hammer.
GWB has to start making public announcements, all America and the willing coalition are getting very tired of the Iraqi's marginal performance.
I am not just reacting to this horrible event we now read about. Surely even the most patient of us that have appealed to give them a chance, are getting weary of how little seems to be accomplished. Baghdad is a war zone. A strange kind of war zone but never the less a war zone. It is no different then what one had to do to clear Berlin out.
In that respect, I do compare similar conditions with what we experienced in many European countries during WWII, for instance.
Snakes must be smoked out and killed. I can easily see where a few tens of thousands of goons should be killed over the next six months. They must be killed. Because they will just lay low and wait for the US to withdraw. Maliki has to understand this is the case.
And if Maliki is in essence putting in time figuring the US will withdraw, then allow the Shia to purge Iraq of Sunni, then he has to be booted the hell out, and Allawi put in place and tell the Iraqi...tough shit boys. You continue to blow the whole deal... now you have forced us to make some decisions we hoped would not have to come to past.

"This demands a strong retaliation by the US, the entire Medhi Army needs to bleed because of this, not just more people put into the catch and release program, they need to be killed." Agreed! If we had dealt with those Iranian backed bastards more of our troops would be alive today. Inaction by Washington is getting our boys killed. Enough is enough we need to take this to the limit - Tehran.

Do the Ethiopian - kill them all simultaneously. Prep a fire mission ASAP.

Fire missions require a discrete target. This isn't 1943 Hamburg or 1945 Tokyo.
