Rudy Giuliani is still the preferred presidential hopeful for Republican Party sympathizers in the United States, according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports. 28 per cent of respondents would support the former New York City mayor in a 2008 primary.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 20 per cent, followed by former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with 14 per cent, and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with eight per cent.
Earlier this month, Gingrich questioned the GOP’s reliance on its conservative base, saying, "Ronald Reagan understood that arguments should be made where we have huge advantages with virtually all Americans. He was brilliant at avoiding base-narrowing appeals and emphasizing base-broadening appeals. A base-motivation party inherently, in the long run, drives away the non-base."
In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.

Yes, whether the "purists" here like it or not, the "top three" are the ONLY ones really in the race. Everyone else, is just spinning their wheels. And for Newt saying that he isn't going to decide, until next September, is actually his way of 1) playing coy and 2) signaling that he is NOT getting into the race.
Besides financial and political backing, there's also "teams" to sew up. If someone hasn't even one of these things RIGHT NOW, they aren't going to EVER going to get them.
Even in 1999, September was TOO LATE to begin getting it all together for the 2000 primary.
And people whop post all kinds of silly things about "white knights" and "dark horses", etc., just prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they have NO idea what they are talking about and don't understand politics at all.
If I knew more HTML, I'd CCP the stuff that Southack has on personal page, re all of the really GREAT things that President Bush has accomplished. Far too many people have no idea just how good a president he has been.
I am sorry, but I do not see him the same way. To me I see him as a moderate Republican at best.
I remember what happened when Clinton shut down the government in winter of 1995 and was (according to later accounts from his WH insiders) within a couple of days from total defeat - Bob Dole "happened" and underrmined Newt first in media and then left Newt without support in Congress, after the media portrayed GOP as monsters who would deny people their SSI checks and Park Services.
Churchull had his share of doubts and acknowledged his mistakes (military and political), but he didn't give up, "never, never, never..."
Of all the current [potential] candidates in GOP, Newt is the most conservative, visionary, firm, organizational, and most importantly he would be an articulate LEADER of the party and movement (Churchillian, you might say) - something you can't say about any other candidate and, sorry to say, our President.

And as for Newt, please. He is the only Republican extant with a greater revulsion factor than missus clinton.

Precisely. And as I said above, Newt is a suicidal choice. He is perhaps the only GOP more reviled by the voter than hillary.
IMO, the one thing (other than the WOT) that we must focus on is this:
In our political system, we really have only 2 choices: Republican or Democrat. All the other candidates and options are mirages: If we vote 3rd party... or if we sit out the election... what we are really doing is placing a de facto vote for the Democrat. We mustn't delude ourselves. We mustn't allow the Left to play us like fiddles.
What's black and white and read all over and is more self-destructive than pre-9/11 thinking?

Putting doctrinal purity ahead of making sure a defective and dangerous clinton never again controls this country is pre-clinton thinking.
We no longer have the luxury of time or circumstance to massage our sensibilities, to indulge our indignations.

We are all clearly very concerned, politically. Of all the crap we could be doing with our lives, we choose to be here debating politics. None of us likes to think we are dumb, either.
Your angry, loud and PERSONAL attacks are how I remember you. And the many deleted posts you pepper threads with as your out of line behavior gets your posts deleted.
If the choice is between two abortion supporters, I will vote third party.
But, at other times, Freepers' passion causes them to speak from the heart in an open and unvarnished way that is rare in real life relationships...and that makes these threads valuable.
I believe I have learned a tremendous amount about politics and life from Freepers and I think I have learned as much from those who disagree with me as from those who agree.
I remember on the first day of undergrad school, some crusty old dean said we'd learn as much in dormitory bull sessions as in class. I don't know if that was true, but FR is certainly one continuous bull session and I have learned much more at FR than I learned in college bull session.
