SENATOR COLLINS DELIVERS “SCENT OF MAINE” TO TROOPS IN IRAQ Collins visited Maine troops during recent trip to Middle East

January 10, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Susan Collins was pleased to be able to deliver more than 100 balsam sachets to Maine soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan during her recent trip to the Middle East.

“It gave me great pleasure to bring to our troops a little gift of balsam sachets from Washington County, the fragrance of Maine. They were delighted with the sachets. A Maine soldier told me that he would hang the sachet by his cot so that he could dream of Maine,” said Senator Collins.

The balsam sachets were handmade by Mary Baldwin at the Wreath Shoppe in Harrington.

This was Senator Collins’ third trip to Iraq and Afghanistan. She spent the week of December 12-19 in Baghdad, Ramadi, and Basra, Iraq and in Kabul and Khost, Afghanistan. As always, the highlight of her visit was her conversation with men and women from Maine serving in these dangerous lands.

“I am so impressed by the men and women of our armed forces,” said Senator Collins. “Our troops are brave, dedicated, compassionate, and highly skilled. They are a credit to our nation, and they enhance the legacy established by those who wore our nation’s uniform in previous generations.”

Senator Collins delivered these balsam sachets to the troops while at the same time dismissing General Kilmer's plea for troop reinforcements in Anwar province. Guess the Senator must have inside information that the Mahid and other jihadists are profoundly allergic to balsam scent, thereby rendering these sachets a more effective weapon than an additional division or two. This is a Republican and (until last week)the Chair of the Homeland Security committee.

Did Lincoln ever face this level of nonsense from within his own party during his war?

It is a nice gesture. The scent of home, and all that.

I would have also included mag of 5.56mm and told them to take out an enemy or two next chance they got.

"Did Lincoln ever face this level of nonsense from within his own party during his war?

In Lincoln's day, Maine provided Joshua Chamberlain.

Bush has to settle for Collins.

Oh, and a couple of boxes of unscented baby-wipes. I have it on good authority that they are sorely needed.

Did any President ever face this kind of nonsense in any war? I don`t even think Nixon faced this kind of insanity. Al-Qaeda could nuke half the US continent into the sea tomorrow and the psychos would be skipping out of the wood work throwing them flowers and glitter.

"They were delighted with the sachets."

Maybe they were delighted, but I suspect they were just being polite and respectful, as they were trained to be.

In essence she was bringing flowers to a grave site. All of these misguided left wing senators made a dirty little pilgrimage to Iraq, as cover for their upcoming vote AGAINST sending more troops to help. Practically a vote the enemy could have drafted. Downright disgusting. And the troops can't even spit in her face because she's a senator.

She also prevented us from having our own oil from Alaska, while she abandons the Middle east oil as well. I'm waiting for someone to denounce these leftists as the immoral kooks they are.

Balsam scent does speak powerfully of home to all Mainers, and it was in fact a nice gesture. BUT approximately 10,000 bandoleers of 5.56mm carried by an additional combat division would have smelled even sweeter. The fastest way to get these kids home is to win.

Bush has got to find his Ulysses

We send stuff to two of my son-in-law's friends that are in the sandbox. They ALWAYS need wipes. We also include single serving drink mixes, chewing gum, paperbacks (the guys send us a list) and chapstick. A third friend is going over in May. He's already been told he'll be on the package list.

You beat me to the punch. It's always been obvious that these two are a pair of doorknobs.
