MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- Denny Doherty, the Canadian member of the Mamas and the Papas folk group, has died.

He was 66.

A family member says the singer-songwriter in the popular '60s group died earlier today at his home in Mississauga after a short illness.

The Halifax-born Doherty led the group onto the charts with hits including "Monday, Monday," "California Dreamin," "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and "Dedicated to the One I Love."

He started his music career in Montreal in 1960 as the co-founder of the Colonials, which later became the Halifax Three.

In the mid-'60s, Time magazine called the Mamas and the Papas one of the top two bands in America and the band was inducted into the Rock and Role Hall of Fame.

Doherty was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1996.

In addition to his singing career, Doherty is known for his work on the children's TV series Theodore Tugboat.

He lived pretty hard in his time, apparently, and that does take a toll. Dayaammm, I was hoping he'd be around for a few more years.

And I still miss Stan Rogers too.

66 is young to be dying. What kind of "free" cr*p Canadian medical care was he suffer through? Why do I think he would still be alive had he lived in LA or NY City?

In any case, I liked his music. RIP.

I dig Rock and Roll music
And I love to get the chance to play. (and sing it)
I figure it's about the happiest sound goin' down today.

The message may not move me,
Or mean a great deal to me,
But hey! it feels so groovy to say:
I dig the Mamas and the Papas at "The Trip,"
Sunset Strip in L.A.
And they got a good thing goin'
When the words don't get in the way.
And when they're really wailing,
Michelle and Cass are sailin'.
Hey! they really nail me to the wall.

I dig Donovan in a dream-like, tripped out way
His crystal images tell you 'bout a brighter day
And when the Beatles tell you
They've got a word "love" to sell you
They mean exactly what they say

I dig Rock and Roll music
I could really get it on in that scene.
I think I could say somethin' if you know what I mean
But if I really say it, the radio won't play it
Unless I lay it between the lines

I wrote a parody of California Dreaming in 2003, California Recall.

I'm told that Michelle Phillips liked it even if she did not agree with the politics.

Rest in Peace Denny. Thanks for the music.

He was the one Mama Cass was in love with. But he just couldn't return the love and was honest about it with her.

That's Denny doing the "Stopped into a church, I passed along the way...well I got down on my kneeeees... and I pretend to pray" part.

Classic pop moment.

I just hope that Denny found some time to stop into a church and not pretend to pray. I hear it helps in the afterlife. Give Cass a giant hug for all of us who miss her.

the only one left is Michelle.

Back in the mid 60's I had such a crush on Michelle....only to see her going downhill on drugs, etc.

She was a "babe" though.
