Shawn Hornbeck's parents say they may never know the full story as to why their son Shawn never attempted to contact them or to escape during the more than four years he lived with the man police say abducted him in 2002. But they said comments by Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly that the boy may have enjoyed living with Michael Devlin more than his family had infuriated the couple.
Shawn's stepfather, Craig Akers, said in an interview with TIME late Thursday evening. "Our son was 11 when he was abducted. A child that age can be mentally manipulated in a very short time. Hearing him say what he said absolutely infuriates me. I can hardly even express how mad it makes me to hear that."

This may be what they referred to when at one of the press conferences, I believe, they said they did a search of his apt and from what they found, federal charges may ensue.
Also the DA of Washington co in the case of Shawn said last night on Larry King they may not have to interview Shawn anymore. He said they have all they need to go forth. This is the same DA that firmly and strongly said that "Shawn is the victim, end of story." I hope this does not go to trial for the sake of those boys.
me either! Shawn doesn't deserve any of this crap that Devil is going to spew out about him!
BOR stated what 90% of the callers to local talk radio stated. I've said it a few times, and will say it again: Something ain't right about this story. More will eventually come out.
There will be more coming out about this, but Shawn was the victim, not Devlin!
I am hoping also that the boys will not have to go to court to tesitfy. Since their interviews with the FBI were video taped, they shouldn't have to appear. Would think the tape would be enough. I hope so!
Halls, NO ONE has said anything about Shawn not being the victim.
THANK YOU!
Well, the more that comes out in this story, the more it looks as though Bill O'Reilly is right.
Fox has a story up that Shawn Devlin reported his bike stolen from in front of Devlins apt, ten months after he went missing. The problem is that the bike he reported stolen wasn't the one he was riding when he left home that day, it was a bike that his parents had bought him one month before he left. He told the police that his name was Shawn Devlin and that Michael Devlin was his father.
And the police didn't for a second see a resemblance to Shawn Hornbeck. I'm not blaming the police, but if I were Shawn, I would think that know one was looking for Shawn Hornbeck. Especially since they were all friends with Michael Devlin.
oops, noone.
BOR right? I think not!
I THInk SHawn either said he was an atheist because to keep his identity unkown to other's, or because he started not to believe in God anymore. I think being rescued has renewed his faith is God.
How in the world does that make BOR "right"?
It wasn't a bike his parents had given him - it was a bike his CAPTOR had bought him as a "birthday present" a month before it was stolen.
Devlin even showed them the receipt, while pretending to be Shawn's father.
I'm not a doctor, but Stayner's death looks a lot like what one pshrink once called a "chronic suicide." No overt acts, but a self-destructive pattern of drugs, booze and other forms of risky behavior. The acts of someone who doesn't have the volition to try to end his life, but has just stopped caring whether he lives or not.
Stayner is the clearest case -- one case can only support so many conclusions, of course -- of the long-term impact of a prolonged abduction, and it's not a pretty picture. I hope the professionals have learned from Stayner, that they can offer help now that they couldn't then, and that Shawn finds a way to a better fate and a happy life.
Ah, I misunderstood the article. Well, at any rate the kid did not seem all that anxious to leave Devlin. Or, at least didn't seem at all miserable. Who knows? I guess we will all have to wait for the trial.
Please don't jump to conclusions about Shawn. JUst because Shawn didn't leave Devlin does not mean he didn't want to. HIs time with Devlin was worse than anything we can comprehend so we can't project our feelings of the situation he went through Devlin onto Shawn.
It seems that Devlin's defense is going to claim that he is asexual and that his diabetes was so severe that he had toes amputated and was possibly impotent. They are going to claim that he was just lonely and wanted the boys to keep him company and play video games with him.
of course that is going to be his defense, but I suspect a jury after hearing Ben Ownby and Shawn tell them exactly what happend the day they fell captive to Devlin that they will not fall into any of the lies spewed by Devil Devlin.
