Shawn Hornbeck's parents say they may never know the full story as to why their son Shawn never attempted to contact them or to escape during the more than four years he lived with the man police say abducted him in 2002. But they said comments by Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly that the boy may have enjoyed living with Michael Devlin more than his family had infuriated the couple.
Shawn's stepfather, Craig Akers, said in an interview with TIME late Thursday evening. "Our son was 11 when he was abducted. A child that age can be mentally manipulated in a very short time. Hearing him say what he said absolutely infuriates me. I can hardly even express how mad it makes me to hear that."

Why do you think they haven't sought professional help? Indeed, they have. The mother repeatedly mentioned that she was not pressing Shawn on the details because of professional advice.

yes, Steven Staynor. Tragically Steven died in a motorcycle accident after living such a troubled life.
I wish Steven's widow would come on TV and put rest people who question why Shawn didn't try and get away. Steven stayed for the same reason Shawn did, FEAR, Terror!
Exactly - this was just part of the whirlwind of his release from captivity - just part of the blur in the rush of the first celebration.
It's over and there's no need to dwell on it. It was kind of like ripping off the Band-Aid in one fell swoop. Now the private healing - and the rest of his life - can begin.
Setting boundaries is going to be the hard part. Like his stepdad said, he hasn't had any rules and is already testing that with his parents. Think how difficult to be the grateful relieved mom and dad who want to shower him with affection, but now have to be worse disciplinarians than they ever would have had to have been in the first place.

O'Reilly didn't merely ask the question, he drew conclusions. Then, when confronted on it, he backtracked and claimed he was merely asking questions. He was irresponsible in his speculation and he is a coward for not owning up to it.

The "libertarian" wing of FR can be most infuriating, and I say that as a former card-carrying Libertarian. To be succinct, I grew up once I was blessed with our three children.
Let us hope, or better yet pray, that this information is wrong or that the content of those tapes is innocent.
