Shawn Hornbeck's parents say they may never know the full story as to why their son Shawn never attempted to contact them or to escape during the more than four years he lived with the man police say abducted him in 2002. But they said comments by Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly that the boy may have enjoyed living with Michael Devlin more than his family had infuriated the couple.
Shawn's stepfather, Craig Akers, said in an interview with TIME late Thursday evening. "Our son was 11 when he was abducted. A child that age can be mentally manipulated in a very short time. Hearing him say what he said absolutely infuriates me. I can hardly even express how mad it makes me to hear that."

most definately shame played a roll in this. A boy at 11 who is sexually molested is put through such cruelty and can't help his reaction to it and feels it is his fault somehow and becomes so very ashamed of himself. So sad really! You could see it on his face on Oprah. He has had years of shame on his face and it will take lots of counseling to know this isn't his fault at all.
Then it is their mistake to make.
Very interesting. And I am very sorry for your experience.
They did not accept any money for the Oprah interview.
And you know this because???
Showing that there is nothing to be ashamed of. That parents will love you no matter what.
To add to the burden of this family and this child is too much. They've suffered enough and I consider them brave to want to reach out. Show the world that no one ought to be ashamed of what happened to them.
I am so proud of Shawn for stepping into the light. He has nothing to be ashamed of because he knows his parents love him......UNCONDITIONALLY.
The look on his face when he looks at them says it all.
It's a wonderful opportunity. I admire this family more than you can know.
I was responding to something the person I addressed my post to had said ...and it wasn't you:-)
You really should try to correct that bad habit.
I was merely echoing what most experts were saying. I assumed with their experience in this area they knew what they were talking about.
The poor kid has all those opportunities to reach out for help and doesn't. I don't discount fear being a prime motivator, nor do I under-estimate the "stockholm syndrome" possibility in this case. Children molested will sometimes show affection towards the abusers in hopes of not being molested again (wrongly).
Anyhow, it's a fair question to ask.
Nevertheless, I hope you feel better real soon.
Oh dear...my bad
You obviously don't want to know the truth and want to remain in ignorance. Perhaps you should correct that bad habit of yours.
They may be absolutely right for some children and families, but not for others. That's what makes it so hard to judge from the outside.
I'm afraid on the media interviews, the "experts" tend to make definitive statements with "always" and "never," because that's what the media wants, sadly. It's a shame they're willing to do that, when the reality is never 100%.
"Shawn and his family wish to thank everyone for their support and words of encouragement. We know that everyone is still wanting to speak with the family and with Shawn, but there will now no longer be any media interviews unless Shawn wishes to speak. Shawn and his family carefully decided to get all of the media interviews overwith in one day so any interviews that you may see on TV from now on have all been pre-recorded. We hope that everyone respects the decision of Shawn and his family during these times and will respect their privacy in the future so that Shawn may begin his journey to lead a normal life at home with his family and friends. Thank You! - 1/19/2007"

You are 100% right on!!!!
You are absolutely stupid. You posted to someone on a public forum, WHO DIDN'T POST TO YOU to begin with. Then when your lies and ridiculous accusations are shot down, you get mad because someone posted to you.
You really should examine posting on a public forum at all, if you don't want replies back.
