With a few dissents, Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL) was elected general chair of the Republican Nat'l Cmte this afternoon. RNC general counsel Mike Duncan was elected chair.

Might folks recall that this guy's job has NOTHING to do with immigration?
Judging by the replies on this thread.... most cannot, will not, or don't know. But hey, let the rants rave on!
I was initially upset about this news based on the general feeling of doom that was felt months ago when we learned of this possible election.
For those of us not in the know, what is the main job of the RNC General Chairman and what kind of leader do we want/need? Will he have an effect on future candidates, especially the presidency in '08? Thanks for any insight.

The RNC can stop sending me their junk mail.Last time the RNC called asking for money I told them not to call me but the illegals that they prefer over taxing paying citizens. I will not send another dime.

Might folks recall that this guy's job has NOTHING to do with immigration? Wrong! This guy will be the face on the tube on all the Sunday talk shows in 2008, screaming about "comprehensive immigration reform" (AMNESTY) and driving even more people out of the Republican ranks.
Ain't called the stupid party for nothin'.
By the way, all those RNC members and chairs are the people who live in mansions and would never see an illegal alien except when he cuts their grass. They don't give a damn about you. To them, "Republican" means they belong to ritzier country clubs than the Democrat elites.

The attempted fix is in for a RINO nominee in 2008.
Given the fact that RINO's have taken over the party, I think the true RINO's are those who hold to conservative values. The GOP is no longer the party of small government, but is now nothing more than a socialist party that will tell you they are pro-life and pro-gun.

I don't know how the Republican Party could do worse than Ken Mehlman. But, we can always count on the Republican Party to find a way. The jury is still out on Martinez. But given the RNC's track record, I certainly don't have my hopes up.

He is very very very proamnesty. I read his quote which was basically "republicans lost because they were against amnesty, and thought illegals were law breakers, etc, and were just rabid racists"... ok that's not how he said it but that is how i took it. like very anti - amnesty pols were NOt elected. Actually, their reaction ... labeling me a racist is starting to have a self fulfilling effect....

Great. Amnesty is a done deal.
Now the GOP will get all the illegal alien "new American" vote. Not.
The GOP will never see power again after '08. Neither will anybody else but Liberals. This country as a "Constitutional Republic" is finished, but we'll pretend it still exists for a while. We will shortly be just another Banana Republic, ruled by unassailable elites.
It was nice while it lasted, but everything has a beginning and an end, I suppose.

Before you posted to me, I was looking for the RNC's job description for chairman. I haven't located any information yet.
I know that the Chairman is the face of the RNC --- appears on TV to articulate the GOP platform --- he raises money for the RNC --- but he does not make policy.
Given that he's President Bush's choice, I would anticipate that he will promote the president's policies.
PKM can surely add to what I've posted. :0)

He's my senator too and he gets a zero from the anti-amnesty community. I think there really is some kind of organization who gave him a zero in that regard.

"The GOP is no longer the party of small government, but is now nothing more than a socialist party that will tell you they are pro-life and pro-gun." They may TELL you they are pro-life and pro-gun, but they seem to be pushing Rudy Giuliani down our throats, and he is neither.
