I don't understand why Kitano didn't just look himself, when it was happening?

Welllllll, think about it.

You are by yourself, and have boat control and rudder problems -> good reason to go diving over the side - IF you're at anchor and are in calm waters and are scuba qualified. But if you get to very shallow calm clear waters, the squid drops off: it doesn't to drag on the bottom in an area were there are no predators and no food.

Open ocean? NEVER go over the side of the boat.

Worse, if you are by yourself in open ocean and suspect a very large predator is sucking up on the bottom of your boat, but is sinking your boat, would YOU go over the side in open water to pry him loose?
