Abdullah: Jordan will develop nuclear power

Jordan aspires to develop nuclear power for peaceful purposes and believes that unless all sides move quickly toward a peace settlement in the region, the recent confrontation in Lebanon is only a hint of disasters to come. In an exclusive interview with Haaretz on Thursday, King Abdullah II of Jordan spoke with Akiva Eldar:

"I can say that on behalf of the U.S. president and the secretary of state, and I've talked to both, that they're very serious and very committed to moving the peace process forward, because they realize the dynamics of the region at the moment.

"And this is the opportunity to reach out to the Palestinians and the Israelis and say, look, this is the golden chance and to an extent, maybe the last possibility. We had a conflict this summer.

So it begins... Unless Iran is stopped, one Muslim nation after the other will have nukes.

Jordan will likely buy commerical plants from us that will not be capable of creating enriched uranium.

Pakistan beat Iran to it. Of course, the label says, 'Made in China,' but who's looking?

This thing is going to come back and bite like nothing else before.

there are 30 nations currently looking to implement the nuke program

its prevents other nations to attack them with conventional weapons

until someone figures out how to neutralize nuke advantage
this silly rock we fly around on, will glow through space

I'm all for nuclear power in the region, its the by product of the process that causes all the problems....that and all the "the annihilation of the pig dog Joose is at hand" talk.

I have fewer problems with this than if other Arab nations were to do so - Jordan has no oil, so they're one of the few Middle Eastern nations that actually need it.

It's similar to Pakistan... Kind Abdullah (and Musharraf) are good guys, but what if the "Palestinian" Islamofascists in Jordan (which gave birth to charming guys like Zarqawi) are going to topple the Royals? Muslim nations with nukes are ALWAYS a threat, whether the government is our ally or not... the region is too volatile.

BTW Jordan has oil. Not much, but they have it. Also imports from their neighbours cover their needs. I see no reason why Jordan should have nuclear power, that outweighs the risks.

Abdullah: Jordan will develop nuclear power

Plants to be built by Euro contractors, since arabs only build mosques. It'll take 20 years.

Jordan has no oil

And no water to cool reactors with, either. Maybe they mean the other type of nuclear power (uncontrolled).

You said -- "So it begins... Unless Iran is stopped, one Muslim nation after the other will have nukes."

Yep, exactly right. The cat is out of the bag right now. And so, regardless of what we do about Iran right now, it's not going to put the brakes on other Middle Eastern countries building nukes.

Already, a few months back, it was announced (in some newspaper article) that at least six M.E. countries were considering it -- now that they see what Iran can get away with.

It's too late -- although we should still send some nuclear bunker busters over to Iran to stop their project. To have stopped all the other countries from moving ahead -- we should have stopped Iran dead in its tracks at least a couple of years ago.

It seems that the U.S. is always a day late and a dollar short...

Not only that, but if they aren't developing weapons, it's none of our business anyways. They've also been one of the better allies we've had in the region (even if it's low-key).
