Maine Governor Nominates Lawyer With No Court Experience to District Court Bench
Maine Senate Republican Press Release | January 18, 2007 | bogeybob

This is incredible. Maine Governor John Baldacci (D) has nominated a flack from the Maine Attorney General's Office as a District Court judge. The staffer, Mr. Chuck Dow, has negligible trial experience. The legislature's Judiciary Committee (8 D, 5 R, 1 Native American) voter 9-3 (8 D's and 1 R) to recommend confirmation by the full State Senate.

The GOP Senate Minority Leader issued a press release, vowing to oppose Mr. Dow's confirmation. A snippet of her press release appears below:

According to a questionnaire completed by the nominee, Dow earned his law degree in 1997 then worked at a Portland based law firm for four months before beginning a 3 year stint at the Speaker of the House of Representatives office in 1998. In 2001, he then accepted a communications position at the Attorney General’s office. In none of these roles did he acquire any courtroom or trial experience.

Senator Carol Weston, the Senate Republican Leader, further explained the caucus’ opposition to Dow. “When we looked into his level of experience after Law School, we found none to speak of. In light of that inexperience, we cannot understand why he is the Governor’s top choice when there are hundreds of other capable, experienced and enthusiastic legal minds in Maine who would welcome this opportunity.” Senator Weston said. “Now, we are being presented with a District Court Judge nominee who has been a Legislative Aide for three years and a legislative liaison for six, with absolutely no courtroom experience.

The Maine Senate is controlled 18-17 by Democrats. I'll bet the nomination, sadly, will be approved.

Speaking as an outsider, I think I would do as well or better than many of the folks currently on the bench and I have no experience whatsoever. Of course, I am not a political hack, so I would never be considered, but don't rule out someone just because they haven't been a trial lawyer.

I'm confused about your statement "Guns are given the death penalty..." I live in Maine, and even the majority of the democrat politicians here are pro Second
Amendment. Guns are everywhere here, and the violent crime rates are very low.

I agree. I may be new here, but come on. Would you not take a lawyer who had "negligable" trial experience? I mean, they had to have passed the bar right?

Would you fly from Boston to LAX on a 747 with someone who had passed a test on the flight manual but never had flown a plane?

No trial experience? Who needs it? All we want is a judge who will legislate from the bench so that MAine gays can get married and blow each other in taxis without fear of arrest.

Insidious is the Democrat liberal socialist agenda. Judicial legislators are being appointed by the Dem whackos all over the nation.

Main will have chowdah heads alright, they will give chowder head from the bench!

Help me out here: what party affiliation is a Native American?

Do they run candidates for governor that I don't know about?

Native American legislators are called "Tribal Representatives" in Maine. They can participate in debates but CANNOT VOTE.

In none of these roles did he acquire any courtroom or trial experience.

But, he did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.
