(AP) SAN FRANCISCO A young mother who claimed she tossed her three young sons to their deaths in San Francisco Bay to send them to heaven was declared criminally insane Wednesday by a judge.
The ruling came a day after jurors found Lashuan Harris, 24, guilty of second-degree murder in the drownings of her three boys on Oct. 19, 2005.
Defense lawyers argued that Harris was schizophrenic and borderline mentally retarded and that she was convinced she was acting on orders from God when she plunged 6-year-old Trayshawn Harris, 2-year-old Taronta Greely Jr. and 16-month-old Joshua Greely into the bay.
First clue to her insanity was the names she gave those poor little kids.
No doubt her defenders and apologists will be here shortly.
What kind of mother names her kid "Joshua?"
of course there is the obligatory swipe at those who believe in a god. "she was acting on orders from God".............
She probably was criminally insane. I think, even in CA, that means they get put away for an indefinite period (that is, committed forever). A few years ago in CA, that meant they were back out on the street after 30 days of "evaluation," but I think a few horrible cases where these nuts immediately killed other people forced even CA to change that law and commit them.
She isn't getting away with it - she was already found guilty of three counts of second degree murder. She's never getting out - she's just headed to a prison mental hospital for a while. And she was never charged with death-penalty-eligible crimes, anyway.
There was a time when women like her were sterilized by the state.
How is that a swipe at believers? Methinks you have your overly sensitive skin on.
The comment was part of her defense (which doesn't make it true, but it certainly doesn't make it a swipe).
If my mother named me Lashuan, I'd be insane too.
I'd have to be, to name defenseless little children Trayshawn and Taronta.

Well, it would be unusual, but probably not cruel. So it would be ok in my book.

With proper sentencing, sterilization would be superfluous.
