Political analyst Dick Morris used a baseball analogy out of season to summarize what he considers the bleak prospects for Republican victory in the 2008 presidential election.
"I think youll see one of the minor leaguers win it [the GOP nomination], Morris told Fox News Channel.
Morris thinks the leading Republican candidates Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are "too flawed to win the hearts and votes of conservatives in the early primaries.
"The top four candidates for the Republican nomination cant win, Morris said. "Rudy Giuliani, John McCain . . . Romney with all of the flip-flops on abortion and Newt Gingrich, who I dont think gets into it.
That leaves a cast of lesser-known Republicans in line for a surprise run toward the nomination.
"I think that the Republican nominee is going to be one of these minor leaguers: [Tom] Tancredo, [Mike] Huckabee, [Sam] Brownback, [Jim] Gilmore from Virginia, Duncan Hunter from California, Morris said. "Its like the pitching rotation is all going to be injured at the World Series and the Triple A pitching staff, one of them is going to pitch the opening game.
Morris suggests the GOP will face Hillary Clinton in "the big game, despite all of the buzz surrounding Sen. Barack Obama.
"Obama serves the function of keeping Al Gore out of the race, Morris said. "He just sucks up too much of the anti-Hillary vote, but he wont win.
Morris said Obamas showing in the primaries may boost Hillary to victory in the general election.
"Hillary will run a vigorous race against Obama, probably a nasty race, he said. "She defeats him, then reaches out to African-American voters and puts Obama on as vice president.
"I have said from the very beginning, Hillary is the Democratic nominee and she is the next president of the United States.
She'll pick Evan Bayh for the VP slot.
If he thinks he can pander his way to the presidency, forget it! Rick Santorum was great but he is gone.
They are ALL pandering their way to the presidency! Look at the new threads on McCain.
I'll gladly vote for Hunter if he can get the nomination, but I think Newt has a more realistic chance of doing so.
I won't vote for Giuliani under any circumstances, and probably will not vote for McCain or Romney, either.
However, as far as Iraq goes, McCain and Romney are saying the right things.
I tend to trust Romney much more than McCain. At least Romney appears to be playing with a full deck mentally, unlike McCain.
Maybe not. She's got a copy of the FBI file [IP7-1690] on Evan's dad Birch, and the murder of his mistress.
It was among the material in those missing FBI files the Clintons took along with them on leaving the White House, and was the reason Al Gore dropped Bayh as his possible VP choice for then mostly-unknown Joe Lieberman.
You can't force people to vote for a candidate with which they have fundamental disagreement on multiple issues.
The best way to go is find someone who is at least plausably conservative, but with a broad appeal, and a good ability to communicate ideas.
That's interesting...thanks. I never heard about that.
Let me repeat, if I could nominate a candidate just on conservative creds without worrying about losing the election, it wouldn't be McCain or Giuliani. But I also don't want to see Lucretia Borgia Clinton or Osama Obama in the White House.
I'm in complete and total agreement. As the Rolling Stones told us, "You can't always get what you want."
And I'd vote for Newt, but I'm telling you Newt has NO CHANCE in the general election because he is damaged goods and a lot of that is due to his own behavior. He should be politically savvy enough to know that himself. I know a lot of people are holding on to him being this strong conservative but I see Hunter as being just as strong and look to see that he has more to offer with his military service and not having gone out disgracefully from his political career during Clintoon-Lewinsky. The hypocrisy label is stuck on Newt.
While true Newt is not unpopular with conservatives, he is going to need a decent amount of independents as well now, isn't he? Doesn't that cross your mind? While it is important for the GOP nominee to have conservative values they are also going to have to get a portion of independents because that alone is not going to win it and Newt is a turn off, period. He did it to himself. Keep that in mind. And while Newt is great with message, Hunter is as well. How can you forget how he went after CNN, Wolf Blitzer on the sniper video in Iraq and asked point blank "Do you want us to win?", saying "The problem is we don't have any more Ernie Pyle's and our helping our enemy". How many Republicans do that? And how many solid all-around men are there like Hunter? Newt is only in the rankings for the GOP primaries and obviously he still holds pull with conservatives but your not thinking wisely for a general election because he is damaged goods.
Correction:"don't have any more Ernie Pyle's and the media ARE helping the enemy".
Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
Dick is probably right ... except if there is another major terrorists attack in America before the '08 candidates are settled upon, in which case rodhamster will be pushed into the ditch where she belongs and Rudy will look a whole lot better to conservatives.
Because Senator Borewnback cannot beat a hillary 'leftists' clinton with the media behind her. Magaerial experience is the only thing that will open a chasm between hillary and the Republican candidate ... we expect real life experience, democrats will vote how they're told to regardless of the candidates experience.
