Dick Morris: ‘Minor Leaguers’ May Lead GOP
NewsMax.com ^ | January 16, 2007 | NewsMax.com staff

Posted on 01/17/2007 7:55:38 AM PST by seanmerc

Political analyst Dick Morris used a baseball analogy out of season to summarize what he considers the bleak prospects for Republican victory in the 2008 presidential election.

"I think you’ll see one of the minor leaguers win it [the GOP nomination],” Morris told Fox News Channel.

Morris thinks the leading Republican candidates – Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich – are "too flawed” to win the hearts and votes of conservatives in the early primaries.

"The top four candidates for the Republican nomination can’t win,” Morris said. "Rudy Giuliani, John McCain . . . Romney with all of the flip-flops on abortion and Newt Gingrich, who I don’t think gets into it.”

That leaves a cast of lesser-known Republicans in line for a surprise run toward the nomination.

"I think that the Republican nominee is going to be one of these minor leaguers: [Tom] Tancredo, [Mike] Huckabee, [Sam] Brownback, [Jim] Gilmore from Virginia, Duncan Hunter from California,” Morris said. "It’s like the pitching rotation is all going to be injured at the World Series and the Triple –A pitching staff, one of them is going to pitch the opening game.”

Morris suggests the GOP will face Hillary Clinton in "the big game,” despite all of the buzz surrounding Sen. Barack Obama.

"Obama serves the function of keeping Al Gore out of the race,” Morris said. "He just sucks up too much of the anti-Hillary vote, but he won’t win.”

Morris said Obama’s showing in the primaries may boost Hillary to victory in the general election.

"Hillary will run a vigorous race against Obama, probably a nasty race,” he said. "She defeats him, then reaches out to African-American voters and puts Obama on as vice president.

"I have said from the very beginning, Hillary is the Democratic nominee and she is the next president of the United States.”

You missed the brouhaha that erupted when pro-abort Mehlman was appointed to the RNC, and when he hand-picked pro-abortion activist Joanne Davidson as his right-hander?

In other words one of the GOP front runners will win the nomination. Obama will win the Dem nomination and the Op will win. why, because Morris is always wrong.

if the voting machine fraud of 2006 doesn't p!$$ off anyone she's has her decor selected...

Amen! The Republicans are always such good losers that it sickens me. No Clinton prosecution, or even exposure, in the name of "a new tone in Washington", no exposure of the Democrats legislative tactics to prevent Republican programs and nominations from passing, no selling of conservative ideas, just sullen silence over the Dems dirty work, and most of all, no suspicion of election fraud with the new electronic voting machines. No purge of illegals, the dead and felons from Democrat voting registers, etc.

The first hint was when the Democrats began warning that the Republicans were going to cheat. That is always a sure exposure of their plans, to project them on others.

Being a gun-grabber is simply not practical politics....There is no way Rudy will shake that baggage. We're too big of a political force

No one will campaign for gun control. After Gore it's a dead issue. Rudy won't even go near it.

This election will be on big issues ...gun control will be a non-issue. .....except on FR.

good analysis! I was thinking though that if it were not one of the front runners it would be Thompson who was not even mentioned.

"As it is, he has a lot to overcome, and I'm not so sure as you that he can do it."

Most of it is contrived heavy breathing by the lefties who fear him, as they should. But I'm not as sure as you seem to have inferred I am re 'overcoming' what is out there. IMO it was the Republicans who failed re the contract, not Newt. Almost all of the rest is just smoke, not fire. For LOTS of Republicans running in the "contract" era, Newts contract was merely good talking points for their own campaign. Shameful IMO.

Much of what you say about Allen is true, but let's remember that the "MSM" was all over him like a cheap suit. Not too many people could withstand that level of scrutiny. George Allen made a mistake (granted, it was a pretty good-sized mistake) and it was caught on video. The "MSM" took it and ran with it because the Hildebeast was more afraid of Allen than any other Republican for 08.

I've said it before, I'll say it again--the best thing you can do with the Washington ComPost is line the bottom of your birdcage with it. Of course, if you have a talking bird, he'll begin shouting "Bush lied" in short order.

"I have said from the very beginning, Hillary is the Democratic nominee and she is the next president of the United States.”

I thought he said that Condi could beat her.

In any case, if our so-called "minor leaguers" are better than our majors, then that will come out in the the campaigns.

I'll not vote for McCain in any case.

I'll vote for Rudi if he changes his anti-life viewpoint to Rilom prolife (rape, incest, life of mother) and firmly speaks against 3rd trimester abortion.

And pledges strict constructionist judges.

It doesn't matter. The NRA and the other big gun organizations will not endorse Rudy. I and millions of gun owners will not vote for him. You're being warned more than a year and a half in advance, so don't act surprised and betrayed by the 2nd Amendment crowd if Rudy is nominated and loses.

Let me make a prediction: if neither McCain or Giuliani is the Republican prez candidate in 2008, we will lose. Nobody knows any of the other Pubbie candidates. Both McCain and Giluliani are popular with many noncommitted/independent voters. That doesn't mean I prefer McCain or Giuliani. It just means that they are the only two Pubbies who can win in 2008. Conservatives might not like that...I don't like that, but that's the facts Jack. Pubbies who swear that they will not vote for either might as well cast their votes for the Dem candidate.

No, they will go third party or simply not endorse anyone. Have you looked at their history of endorsements? One needs to earn them. They're not given out for every race.

Allen should have come clean about his mother's background years ago, and I can't understand why he didn't.

Simple. He didn't know. His mother lied to him for many years and it was only first suggested by a gotcha writer. Allen didn't confirm until he got it from his Mom.

And, of course, Webb ran an anti-Semitic campaign starting in the primaries.

I agree. McCain and Giuliani are the only guys with any centrist appeal, like them or not. Of the two, Giuliani is the stealth consevative. McCain apparently has a Bad Idea Machine in his office that generates malicious legislation under the guise of good government.

As for abortion, if the right judges are appointed, the issue will be returned to the states, where it belongs.

"If conservative vote third party, they will give us Hillary - just as Ross Perot gave us Clinton. It would be a terrible, terrible mistake."

Hi, juliej! Let's restate that a different way:

If the GOP nominates a RINO, they will give us Hillary, because the party leadership refused to heed the warnings.
