Ethnic and racial tension comes to Los Angeles as regularly as the Santa Ana winds. Race-related fights afflict school campuses and jails, and two major riots, in 1965 and 1992, are hardly forgotten. But civil rights advocates say that the violence grew at an alarming rate last year, continuing a trend of more Latino versus black confrontations and prompting street demonstrations and long discussions on talk-radio programs and in community meetings.
Much of the violence springs from rivalries between black and Latino gangs, especially in neighborhoods where the black population has been declining and the Latino population surging. A 14 percent increase in gang crime last year, at a time when overall violent crime was down, has been attributed in good measure to the interracial conflict.
This month, the authorities reported that crimes in the city motivated by racial, religious or sexual orientation discrimination had increased 34 percent in 2005 over the previous year. Statistics for 2006 have not yet been compiled.
Rabbi Allen Freehling, executive director of the Los Angeles Human Relations Commission, a group created after the 1965 riots, said the recent growth in hate crimes reflected a failure by government and community leaders to prepare residents for socioeconomic changes in many neighborhoods, and therefore people have a tendency to lash out, out of desperation.

Absent fathers, drugs in the home but they always come back to "society's to blame"....I'm of a mind to turn my mind off.
Also, see tag line.
"the recent growth in hate crimes reflected a failure by government ... to prepare residents for socioeconomic changes..."
the projects were supposed to be the socioeconomic utopia for the liberals, what happened? in nyc last month, when the protests ensued after the unfortunate police shooting incident you saw the leaders of the black community (jesse and al) marching hand in hand with known gang leaders and nobody said a word, meanwhile everyone knows that these thugs (the gang leaders, not jesse and al) had a free pass for a couple of weeks 'cause all the cops were instructed not to incite any further incidents. once again, liberal logic at its finest.
"Our diversity is our strength."

...Constance L. Rice, a veteran civil rights lawyer, said that, considering Los Angeless diversity, race relations remained relatively calm and were even marked by many examples of groups getting along.
Now, imagine what Mz. Rice would be saying if these "hate crimes" were occuring in...oh, let's say...Birmingham!
The problem is the overarching liberal assumption that only whites (correction: southern whites) can be racists. Everyone else must get a pass lest there be any sense of letting white people off the hook.
If this were happening in B'ham the same civil rights community would have called for marshall law a long time ago. And the MSM would be in racist heaven 24/7.
In Denver where a gang killed another Bronco gang member..has tagged the site already....coming to a neighborhood near you...and with another 30 million illegals coming to the US...get ready for fun
No it is idiots like the Rabbi who look at the problem and see blame for everyone but the guilty. The problem is that the community is fed a constant diet of hate disguised as "Pride" while coddling its criminals. That's a recipe for trouble. Meanwhile, the Rabbi wants to find a way to blame "society" so he doesn't have to point fingers at the bad guys.
..so if we lump together crimes where a black commits a crime against another black, and a white commits a crime against another white, and a jew commits a crime against another jew, and a gay commits a crime against another gay. that 34 percent means nothing right? See if we can't include social mind policing in figures than we can't really tell a story, or for that matter, feel better or worst about ourselves,....just rub your wrist raw with worry about what political correctness has created, punish and ostracize anyone who mentions a word, draws a cartoon,or suggests a common sense approach to law enforcement. Single out a religion which offends another and act to suppress that religion...that will make you "feel" better for the moment. Bend over backwards to please people who will not assimilate into a society, and follow that countries laws....less you offend. Don't think your offending anyone when you allow people to run lawless because of race or ethnics. Thirty or fourty years of the feel good mentality has come home to roost....now complain to the American public about what to do. Doogle
This is not a 'twist on past racial drama', this is the 'same old same old' status quo of the last 30 years in LA. This status quo consists of gangs, either formal or informal, of young blacks creating 'no-go' zones in the city for white citizens, of young black thugs stealing, car-jacking, mugging and dealing dope - all the while being celebrated in Hollywood Movies and lionized in rap songs. It consists of a one sided street race war where whites have learned to fear blacks, especially groups of young males, whether in the mall, the synagoge parking lot or the local safeway.
This day to day black-on-white violence and intimidation is the norm, not the exception in LA (and much of the rest of urban America - including I dare say New York.)
And occassionallly when the day-to-day violence erupts into a orgy of burning and looting, that too is predominantly a Black perpetrated crime spree.
Where do these reporters get off making up reality?
We might all wish that America didn't have racial problems but lying about them is not going to help fix them.
"the recent growth in hate crimes is caused by government ..
..it's not that they make up reality, it's that they cover and try to explain away utter failure as far as social programs that don't work, their liberal agenda of creating social dependency, and when shown the facts, ignore and try their best to expand more failure with more "excuses", it's society's fault,....for everything.
Despite the spike in hate crimes in 2005, the total number of bias-related incidents in Los Angeles, 333 in a city of 3.8 million people, was down from peaks in violent crime in the mid-1990s and just after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Hmmm. No further reference to any evidence of that "peak in violence" after 9/11.
Most "bias related incidents" don't get reported. Did the Nation of Islam thugs smashing Korean liquor stores get reported as a hate crime. I doubt it. Just ordinary run-of-the-mill ghetto thuggary. Nothing to see here, lets move on.
