Nifong a Topic at State Bar Council (and Feds Decline to Act for Now)
Eyewitness News 11 ^ | 1/16/07

This week Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong could be slapped with more charges related to his handling of the Duke Lacrosse case.

This week the State Bar Council will be holding its quarterly meetings in Raleigh. During this time, the agency could add ethics charges against the Durham district attorney.

Nifong recused himself from the Duke Lacrosse case shortly after the state bar filed an ethics complaint against him last month. He's accused of misconduct for statements he made to the media last spring.

In a letter obtained by Eyewitness News, defense attorney, Joe Cheshire requested to meet with Nifong in March about the statements.

"I do not understand why you will reportedly speak to the media in such certain, condemning terms before all the evidence is in, but you will not have the courtesy to meet or even speak with a representative of someone you have publicly condemned," Cheshire stated in the letter.

Nifong could also face additional charges for withholding DNA evidence that was favorable to the accused players. Evidence that is now in the hands of the state's Attorney General.

"We accept these cases with our eyes wide open to the evidence, but with blinders on for all other distractions," Roy Cooper said.

The State Bar Council meets today.

The council will decide this spring if his public comments about the case were a violation of the professional rules of conduct. Nifong's ethics meeting is scheduled for May.

No Federal Probe

The U.S. Attorney General's office has responded to Congressman Walter Jones' request for a federal probe of the Duke Lacrosse Case.

In a letter delivered Thursday, Alberto Gonzales' office wrote that it would be, "Premature to initiate a federal investigation pending a criminal trial."

This means the Attorney General will not be getting involved in the case at this time.

Correction: St. Francis de Sales, contemporary of St. Vincent de Paul. A lot of things relevant to today went on in the 16th century. Francis (a white bread Frenchman)was captured by African (quite possibly black) slave traders, sold into slavery to Muslims, rescued/escaped, returned to France to continue his education, was accused by a judge of stealing, was stained by the label of "Thief" for six years, was exonerated by the man who actually did the crime when the man was about to be executed and wanted to "confess" his sins. Many lessons in the story.

May I recommend Jefferson's War which I'm currently working my way through on audio book. I knew it was going on, but I had no idea the extent to which European and later American whites were enslaved by the North African Barbary states. There is a reason the phrase "galley slave" came into being and it wasn't a reference to the kitchen. There's also a reason "to the shores of Tripoli" is in the Marine Corp. hymn.

The black Africans' enslavement in the New World was far from a unique experience in the world of that era.

Thank you, I shall check out our library tonight. Lots of statements regarding Jefferson and the Koran lately have piqued my interest. I know my kin weren't particularly found of him from all I can read. Seems Guv Morris thought Jefferson was a hypocrite, but what can I tell you, I wasn't there.

OT:

Jefferson was clearly a complex man. It's hard to reconcile some parts of his life with other parts.

For example, Jefferson was thought to be a semi-pacifist yet he launched a naval war against the muslim Barbary states without even bothering to ask Congress. This was in response to repeated terror attacks on and enslavement of Americans conducting commerce in the Mediterranean. The Europeans, especially the powerful English and French, had failed to put a stop to it and maintained their safety by the payment of annual tribute and, in fact, were thought to be inciting the north African muslims against the Americans. The author is drawing parallels between then and now.

People who cite the Declaration of Independence and "endowed by their Creator" often fail to take note of the "Jefferson Bible" in which Jefferson essentially rewrote the gospels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Bible

(one link of many) to get rid of the divinity of Jesus. And they also fail to cite "The Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom"

http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/infousa/facts/democrac/42.htm

(one link of many). For these reasons, Jefferson, in his time and later, was often labeled as our "First Atheist President" which makes the claims associated with his ownership of the Koran a little thin.

Like I say he's a fascinating guy.

I'm reading 'Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South' for the second time. The first was in 1981. It was a required text in my Southern History course at The University of Alabama. Roll Tide.

She may need Maury for help with the new baby daddy.

Isn't interesting that MSM hasn't tracked down the father of her two other children? Maybe it has to do with those other probes, who knows ...

Well my father played tackle at Auburn (class of 1941) so I'm going to have to give you a "War Eagle" in return. :)

They're a joke.

Underage drinking is really bad, according to them, but a hooker with sperm from seven guys in her is okay.

And they think the Duke kids wanted to have sex with her? Boy are they kidding themselves.

"Tone down the language"

?...Pardon me, but those were Ditto's own words. I merely continued the metaphor.

"Vomitus eruptus" is exactly right. However, I strongly suspect that even those who accept the poet's premises and are part of the "special group" would have a difficult time explaining what was being said. Is a work product Art, if it is only understood/appreciated by the artist?
