Is Rudy Likely to Be a Favorite or a Flop?
Real Clear Politics ^ | January 16 2007 | Stuart Rothenberg

Today's deepest division is between those political observers who believe that Rudy Giuliani is a credible contender for the Republican presidential nomination and those who think that his chances are no better than those of California Rep. Duncan Hunter.

~snip~

Giuliani's strong showing in GOP polling reflects his celebrity status and the reputation he earned after the terrorist attacks. But if and when he becomes a candidate, that will change. He will be evaluated on the basis of different things, including his past and current positions and behavior, and he'll be attacked by critics and opponents. A Giuliani nomination would also generate a conservative third-party candidate in the general election and tear the GOP apart, thereby undercutting Giuliani's electability argument.

So, the former mayor might make a terrific general election candidate, but I don't see how he can get there as a Republican.

So did some he didn't try to help.

Some candidates that President Bush tried to help, also lost; some didn't.

But since you apparently relish that idea, why don't you post what you REALLY meant by it?

Rudy had nothing to do with it.

So much for "leadership."

I never said Rudy was a miracle worker, the damage to the GOP and Iraq done by the DEMS was long standing ,it would take alot more than a few public appearances to change the American publics mind now.

I will state that it will take a miracle for the GOP party to win if they are not united.

Every precinct phone bank, precinct walk, candidate rally, anti-war counter protest and individual money contributions come from those Christian, activist, pro-life conservatives (who also have children, spouses and parents in the military ranks)...

Yet, the new Rosie O'Donnell wing of the Republican party who compares the Christians with the Taliban seem hell bent on losing their votes.

The people who actually have jobs and work for a living have not nearly as much time as the check pant, country club RINOs whose only activity is hobnobbing with their elitist liberal friends at cocktail parties and awards dinners.

Dear patriciamary,

If social conservatives accept your analysis, then it will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I'm a little less defeatist than that.

Dear patriciamary,

I expect that in the short-term (the next eight or 12 years) Mrs. Clinton might harm us a little more than Mr. Giuliani. Or not.

In the long-term, Mr. Giuliani will do more to set back the cause significantly more than Mrs. Clinton.

Why did all the social conservatives vote for Bush? The lesser of 2 evils?

Question 1: I didn't in the first primary. I wanted a conservative.

Question 2: In a word - "Yes".

Why settle for half a pie when you could have none.

Who says we have to settle?

Then we better defeat Rudy in the primaries.

Because it had nothing to do with his extramarital affair and divorce with his wife? I guess when Donna Hanover is holding her own press conferences accusing Rudy of infidelity, it wouldn't affect his decision to run or not? While I understand the cancer treatment was the ultimate reason he stepped aside, he took way too long to decide wheather he was running all the while knowing he was having one if not multiple affairs that was going to be made public. All of which left Lazio hanging in the wind after both D'Amato & Pataki failed to step up.

I'm not willing to vote for one liberal to avoid another.

What he said! That one's golden, I hope you don't mind if I borrow that quote for my own use.

Naturally, you don;t have to compromise at all. Please feel free to stick by your principles at all costs.

And good luck to you.

He's a flop with me, but I'll hold my nose and vote for him, if that is the 'Pubbie ticket.
On the other hand, McCaine is right out...
