Today's deepest division is between those political observers who believe that Rudy Giuliani is a credible contender for the Republican presidential nomination and those who think that his chances are no better than those of California Rep. Duncan Hunter.
~snip~
Giuliani's strong showing in GOP polling reflects his celebrity status and the reputation he earned after the terrorist attacks. But if and when he becomes a candidate, that will change. He will be evaluated on the basis of different things, including his past and current positions and behavior, and he'll be attacked by critics and opponents. A Giuliani nomination would also generate a conservative third-party candidate in the general election and tear the GOP apart, thereby undercutting Giuliani's electability argument.
So, the former mayor might make a terrific general election candidate, but I don't see how he can get there as a Republican.

Newt and McCain are far worse than Rudy; but, for whatever reason, you overlook both of these men's egregious flaws, which put both of them on your sort of okay list; throwing in Romney as a sop, I suppose. You need to explain, point by point, what makes old KEATING FIVE, McCAINE FINGOLD, LEADER OF THE GANG OF 14, MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE McQueeg, who also has a whole lot pf personal baggage, "okay" to you. And then, there is Newtie , whose public and priv ate baggage is the worst of the entire lot. I'm juts dying to hear how you are going to wriggle out of that on! *snicker*
No, I'm not the one spinning on this thread, I'm the posting facts. And FWIT, if Reagan was running today, you, YES YOU (!), would be here throwing boulders at him!
Having a bloody, gaping hole in the middle of your face is really not all that attractive. Perhaps you should rethink your emotional kneejerkism.
Good reality check.
This article from National Review shows more of Rudy's Conservative achievement.

I lived in NYC when Dinkins was Mayor, and when Rudy was Mayor. With all due respect, you have no idea what you're talking about.

And the funny thing is, that Ronald Reagan's terms as governor would NOT pass their muster, either, if Reagan were now here and throwing his hat into the ring.
It's Roman Catholic Rudy's, PRO abortion stand, that makes him unacceptable to a lot of posters here.

A babykilling gun grabbing double-divorcee faux-Catholic is NEVER gonna get my vote. Ever.
No. It hasn't been a state issue since Roe v. Wade was decided over 30 years ago.
Only to a liberal.
Maybe one day you'll make an effort and respond to the factual evidence contained in my posts to you, instead of flying off the handle and fabricating pure crapola. Obviously, you're attempting to drive a wedge between conservatives. Most conservatives understand that Rudy is a liberal and not representative of conservatism. You OTOH, are a member of the GOP`s moderate-centrist-liberal wing, and very supportive of Rudy Giuliani candidacy. Fine. So be it.
Fact remains, this has nothing to do with Ronald Reagan. Reagan is D*E*A*D! But Reagan never raised federal income tax rates. Reagan cut federal income taxes 25% across the board and lowered the top rate from 70% to 28%. Reagan was a conservative. Giuliani is a liberal. The sooner you grasp that fact, the easier the next two years will be on you.
President Bush had the advantage of a Republican-controlled Congress for six years. The Democrat minority had virtually no chance to get its social liberal and anti-Second policies heard let alone passed.
That will change if a social liberal is voted into the White House.
A Giuliani-Reid-Pelosi social liberal triumvirate is likely agree on many pernicious policies:
First, they hate guns and distrust citizens who have them. Look for tighter gun controls and far more aggressive prosecution of gun laws by the BATF. Remember: Giuliani is a former prosecutor. Unlike any other previous president, he will know how to aggressively push criminal laws to fulfill an anti-gun agenda. You can expect him to take an intense personal interest it.
Second, they will likely agree on expansive federal hate crime legislation. Such legislation is designed less to secure justice than it is to secure and compel submission to the radical gay agenda by making social conservatives fear speaking out against homosexuality.
Third, they will likely agree to allow gays to serve openly in the military.
Fourth, they will likely agree on "moderate" SCOTUS justices--liberalspeak for left wing loons. At best, Giuiliani will "balance" the two likely appointments he will get by appointing at least one "moderate" to keep the split at 5-4 in favor of a liberal activist court. By appointing a nominal conservative he will assert he acted conservatively, but the result will be no change at all.
This is just the start. There are far more social conservative issues that a Giuliani-Reid-Pelosi triumvirate will agree on than it will disagree on.
A Giuliani administration would be an unmitigated disaster for social conservatism across the board.
Okay, you lived in NYCity during the Dinkins and Giuliani periods. Whatever. Having been born and raised in NYCity, I know something about the liberal mentality. I communicated with my family and friends in the metro area during both the Koch, Dinkins and Giuliani periods. Everyone thought Giuliani was better then Dinkins. Who wouldn't. But according to those family and friends, those good old fashioned Big Apple conservatives I speak too, Rudy isn't presidential material. Btw, Deroy Murdock slides off his chair at the mere mention of Rudy Giuliani`s name.
FLOP. I don't like RINOs, especially the NY type.
And while Rudy may, or may not fit into that category, the dems will surly want to pave the way for someone who is. And if they can get him to help them, well, they will, and he'll let them.
NY did after all elect Hitlery, and NYC played a large part in her ascension to the Senate.
Sorry Dude, big city pols from BLUE States, even RINO's, don't play well out here in flyover country.
More than anything else, however, Giuliani looks like a winner, a Republican who can defeat Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) or Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). Giuliani would have appeal to independents and even Democrats, and he'd have a better chance than any other Republican on the planet of carrying states in the Northeast and industrial Midwest. At the very least, he'd force Democrats to play defense in states they take for granted. For Republicans, electability suddenly takes on increased importance after the party's defeat in the midterm elections, and a number of veteran Republican insiders argue that Giuliani's apparent appeal in the general election could entice GOP primary voters and caucus participants to look past his views on social issues.
Those are plenty of assets, and they help explain why Giuliani performs so well in early polls.
a flop
You are the very antithesis of pragmatic.
It's going to be Rudy or Mitt or GODFORBID McQueeg for the GOP and frankly, I really DO doubt that McLame has much of a chance of winning the primary.
Can Mitt beat Hillary? I don't know. Can Rudy beat her? YES!
Will Hillary even BE the Dem presidential candidate? Perhaps, but I wouldn't bet money on it. That is NOT a certainty!
I was born and raised in NYC, and I still live here, as do my family and friends.
My experience living here during the awful times, and being here when Rudy came in and turned the City around, is shared by most of the people I know. Except for hard core far left Liberals, and racial minorities. But they would never vote for a Republican anyway.
NYers know Rudy first hand, and we have been with him all through 911.
Almost all of the many Conservatives I know here, in addition moderate Republicans, and many Democrats, are supporting Rudy.
IMO almost all will come on board if Hillary or Obama is the Dem nominee.
