Nuclear Blast on TV's '24' Causes Fallout for Fox (PC crybaby alert)

"How much longer? I hear someone," says the nervous terrorist with a heavy Middle Eastern accent, just before U.S. agents storm a warehouse where a nuclear device is being assembled. Confusion reigns, drama builds, the device is detonated and a mushroom cloud looms over Los Angeles. Such is primetime television in the age of terrorism, or as some critics charge, has "24" gone too far?
"It's the closest television comes to roller coasters," said David Bianculli, television critic for the New York Daily News. "It works well dramatically, and as far as feeding fears, that's what '24' is all about."
Sut Jhally, co-producer and co-director of the film "Hijacking Catastrophe," says the dramatic action in the show creates a dangerous climate in which the public loses some of its perspective on what's real and what's not. Of course that may be a minority opinion given the show's enormous popularity.

If there was no such TV show as "24" there would be no prejudice and stereotyping against Moslems and everybody would realize what nonviolent, gentle and peaceful folks they are, just based on the way they conduct themselves all over the world.Never said that. But the only place I've seen stereotypes used in such a ham handed manner is probably 'professional wrestling'. And that's usually aimed at 5 year olds and rednecks as a focus group.

"Reality" in the sense that it accurately depicts the world we live in. However, the writing and casting needs a bit more work.

But Nielson chooses people at random and gives them a device that records what they watch for about 2-6 months. About 30 years ago, we were the lucky family selected by Nielson to install one of their boxes and determine viewing patterns for the entire country.
The only thing, at that time WE DID NOT OWN A TV!!!!

Your comments remind me of people who quote Rush out of context. You can't sum up this show based on a few minutes of one episode.

from the article:
"Remember what mom said, it's not real. I recognize the power of an image to motivate people, but our political leaders are far more dangerous than the collateral effects of a mushroom cloud on "24." Liberals don't believe in mature adulthood, they believe in keeping everyone as dumb as children. They love talking down to us children.

You mean like the season that the pretty little blonde jihadi killed her Arab fiance on their wedding day?

"The Day After" was an ABC drama televised at precisely the time Reagan was fighting to introduce intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Europe. And it was blatantly intended to influence public opinion on that subject. I remember Peter Jennings pontificating about the show on the Evening News, as though that made it important. The show was a complete bomb (no pun intended).Ah, but we had RED DAWN and that made all the difference.
