"How much longer? I hear someone," says the nervous terrorist with a heavy Middle Eastern accent, just before U.S. agents storm a warehouse where a nuclear device is being assembled. Confusion reigns, drama builds, the device is detonated and a mushroom cloud looms over Los Angeles. Such is primetime television in the age of terrorism, or as some critics charge, has "24" gone too far?
"It's the closest television comes to roller coasters," said David Bianculli, television critic for the New York Daily News. "It works well dramatically, and as far as feeding fears, that's what '24' is all about."
Sut Jhally, co-producer and co-director of the film "Hijacking Catastrophe," says the dramatic action in the show creates a dangerous climate in which the public loses some of its perspective on what's real and what's not. Of course that may be a minority opinion given the show's enormous popularity.

PING!
"Too far" is watching a rerun of some guy with a pierced scrotum on "Jackass".
ABC is just jealous of 24's ratings.
can't have the sheeple seeing what might happen if we lose the war, can we?
Good 'un.
As eyespy and I discussed this morning, what we learned from watching 24 Sunday night and last night is that if your neighbors go to beat the crap out of a Muslim neighbor, let them. That Muslim neighbor might just be a terrorist.
and by all means go armed!
No, Arabs reinforce stereotypes about Arabs.
I also learned what can happen to our country when a weak President gets in office - one that caves in to terrorist's demands.
I am a huge fan of 24 and have noticed this year, a lot more "Are we violating somebody's rights??? (whine, whine) being done and some not-so-veiled attacks on the Bush administration.
Ironically though, they also have some interesting contradictions to that...like the time Jack is torturing a guy and he decides the suspect has no more information because he "sees it in his eyes", then his Islamic traitor ally sticks a knife in the guy's kneecap and the guy starts spilling info. In other words, TORTURE WORKED!
The fact is, there ARE suitcase nukes out there, and there ARE Islamofacists that would use one in a heartbeat if they could.
Unlike in 24, it won't go off in a remote warehouse, it will go off adjacent to a football stadium full of people, or a business district at 2pm.
reality bites.
The ABC critic doesn't know the difference between nuclear power and nuclear bomb. ABC is sad because FOX is doing so well vs. the lies of the alphabet media's biased news and programs.
Really? I think its a load of crap. The entire article. Oh, and once they stated that line about FOX having a political propaganda, the article lost all credibility.
However, as near as I can tell, after two democrat presidents with appropriately PC aides, in 24-world the USA is now suffering terrorist attacks every day, the democrat Chief of Staff (who looks like Bill Kristol) is trying to set up concentration camps, the Chinese are up to something, and this was the first detonation of FIVE nuclear devices which were brought into the US.
While some people are carping that the show haas moved left, it appears to me we are seeing the alternate universe if Gore had won the election in 2000.
it also tells us no matter how nice that muslim neighbor is, they are definitely hiding something, and just might be that next out of the closet terrorist.
